Discover Media - Failing touch screen and beeping

Post by Keyfski »

Hi all,

This is fault and repair heads-up (sorry if there is already a thread for this, but didn't see it if there is)

The VW Discover Media system in my 2015 face lift Scirocco has been slowly failing over the past year with parts of the screen becoming unresponsive to touch. Recently it got worse and became 'haunted' and would start randomly beeping with the Sat Nav / Waze location jumping around, changing the radio station, skipping music tracks and even once opened my contact list and initiated a call! (My Dad was happy to get a phone call, even if it was the car that dialed him :)

A little Googling showed this is a known fault to many VW models of the age and is down to faulty digitizer. Vdub of course will just swap out the unit at great expense (+£2000 according to some reports)

If anyone is experiencing similar problems, I just want to reassure you, I successfully repaired mine last weekend (24th May 2024). I followed the standard internet / YouTube advice, ordered the new part from China (took about a week to arrive), removed the trim (actually my biggest worry before doing it), disconnected and removed the unit, disassembled it (warranty is long gone anyway), fitted the new digitizer to the front of the screen and re-assembly was just the reverse. Once back in the car it was good as new and identical looking to how it was before (attached photo of it back in the car after the repair)

The part is pretty cheap (usually around $25) and I only needed a trim tool, a flat bladed screwdriver and a couple of Torx screwdrivers to complete the job. It's not difficult to do and way cheaper than a replacement head unit of dubious compatibility

I hope my sharing this positive experience helps someone out and saves them a lot of money

All the best
K
