Old Scirocco and new phone

When I try to pair my Scirocco (October 2008) to my phone (iPhoneSE) it recognizes the phone name, but indicates it it not compatible.

It has the RNS510 and 9w2 bluetooth according to the build sticker, and is a German market car.

Is there a list of compatible phones?

Have you tried a mates phone?
I have the same stereo and my iPhone 11 works fine for everything (calls / music etc)

Not yet. I have a refurb phone coming from China that's about the last option I can see.

I've tried a number of iPhones, all the way back to a 3GS, without luck.

Okay. I've tried:

Nokia 5310 MusicXpress
Samsung Galaxy 6
Iphone 3GS to Iphone SE(2020)

The Nokia is the closest to working. The car searches for phones and discovers the Nokia. The car gives me a pairing code which I enter. Phone says it's connected to the VW, and then immediately says it is disconnected. Yes, Bluetooth is on and discoverable by all devices. Other phones are detected, but are "Incompatable", before pairing.

I wonder if there is some subtle difference between a Euro and N/A protocol? If an iPhone 11 works, my SE should.

There is a mounting argument for a replacement head unit.
