installing a reverse camera through number plate light area

Post by Trentz »

Hi All

MK3 roco
I have a new rcd360 fitted in and want to include a reverse cam

Does anyone know how to install a reverse camera that's designed in a rear number plate light module.(comes with its own light in the module) ?

This is the product: https://shorturl.at/gjuIU

This module fits perfectly in the slot however Im not sure how to install it as it's only possible to remove the rear number plate light bulb holder from the housing only and not the whole thing so that i can access just the power cables (red and black ones)

Is there a way to separate the light bulb and its holder I can wire it up with the new module that includes the camera?
Cheers

The number plate light and the bulb/bulb holder separate from each other. You should be able to twist the base of the bulb holder and it will release from the light unit. The bulb also disconnects from the bumper loom.

I have just fitted almost exactly the same camera unit.. it needed a little bit of filing of the edge of the hole for it to fit properly, but that could just be my bumper moulding (it's not an original).

I bought a conversion loom to connect to the back of my head unit (the later Discover Media Nav), then it was a case of enable the r ar view camera and backup camera options in VCDS, and I now have camera overlay working.

Oh, and be careful, if you leave the hazard warning/airbag warning light switch disconnected while you test things, be warned that you will get an airbag warning code that you will need to clear - having the button/warning light above the central air vents connected is part of a working airbag circuit. You will need to clear it with VCDS if you put it he ignition on with the switch disconnected.

(Not sure if the above is relevant to pre-facelift headunit/heater control area, but it certainly is on the later cars - it's also a right pain to remove the surround!)

The on screen warning is nothing to do with the camera btw, I have a faulty parking sensor loom at the rear that is due for replacement.

For anyone with the later Discover head units, not the early RCD models, this is the adapter I used:
