Replace MIB head unit in face lift car (2015)

Post by rara »

Hi,

I have this Discover Media unit currently; https://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/wp-con ... fit1-1.png" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I have two problems with it;
  • 1. There is a pretty big "dead zone" in the centre of the screen. Basically an area where touch will not work at all. I get around this by using the physical buttons and control nobs.
    2. Sometimes the unit will "touch itself" ( :D ). It will beep and change radio stations as if someone is touching it. Sometimes it works perfect for days and days, but then the odd time it goes nuts completely, change radio station/media song itself and will not respond to any inputs. I have to hold the power button down for 15sec to reset it, then it usually goes back to normal.
VW dealer says it has latest software and nothing can be done with it. He says they don't fix screens, they can only replace the entire unit and quoting big money for parts and labour, in region of ~1900E / 1700£.
I want to replace the MIB unit myself with a non oem head unit. I've seen a few people suggesting the kenwood (https://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/car/oem/vw/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), but again it seems a bit expensive, I see it on a number of sites for ~1000£. I would prefer a cheaper android head unit (under 500£). I've been looking at this site https://xtrons.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , they have a good few options but they all say they are for scirocco (2008-2011). Mine is 2015 face lift, I emailed the company to query this but no reply.

Has anyone here replaced the MIB in a facelift car with an android unit? Any recommendations? Or maybe the simplest thing is just fork out the cash for the kenwood?
(I want to keep the parking sensors display working and steering wheel controls. Also I want bluetooth calls and media, don't care about DAB or reverse camera. Hopefully just plug and play?)

Any advice appreciated.

I realise this is an old thread but recently joined the forum and having similar issues for my 2017 R line (stuck in boot loop).

Did you eventually resolve the issue?

Did you ever solve this issue .. I purchased a 2017 Rocco after my trusty 2010 Rocco was smashed into .. my head unit also had a dead spot area. It’s the screen built in digitizer that has faulted. It can be repair for about 10wyid and about 30mins of your time .. I did mine and never had a issue since
