Mine's going in for this issue on Monday and Tuesday next week ... haven't spoken to the mechanic yet to see what the solution recommended from VW is, but I'm assuming it's a big job for 2 days work !!!

Hello all,

My Scirocco TSi DSG also has a metallic "rattle", not to be confused with "raspy exhaust noises". It is at its worst when cold, under load (going uphill, or accelerating) between 2000 and 3000 rpm. It doesn't seem to make this noise in neutral. Took it to VW who took it for a short test drive, then put the car on a ramp and quickly peered underneath, then stated 'nothing to worry about'. It is NOT the hatch/dash/interior trim that is making this noise. I think it is somewhere near the downpipe area. I would be most grateful if anyone has a solution for this.

It might just be to do with the resonance at a natural frequency of a part of the engine / cladding / bodywork which only manifests itself with a rev range under load conditions.

If it is you may well just have to live with it or spend a lot of time and effort trying to track it down with no guarantee that you will ever get to the bottom of it.

At least if it came from the boot you could lock an apprentice in there for the test drive with a torch to track it down. :)

I have never experienced it myself but will try and replicate it later with the stereo off and report back.

But going by the number of the posts with people having the same problem I would not be overly concerned.

EDIT TO ADD.

Checked this out through all gears and could not get the "rattling" sound, sorry. :(

I have had this rattle now for a few months. With the warm weather I have had my windows down and the noise is 'embarrasing' - time to do something about it. I had exactly the same problem on a Golf GT TDI many years ago - it is the heatshield on the exhaust vibrating at certain revs - mainly as you go up through the gears. I now ease off the accelerator as I pull away to stop the rattle in public places. I have the DSG box and it is annoying. I will get my car booked into my local garage and let you know the outcome. Steve.

Is there actually a confirmed problem here?

Mine makes this metallic rattle/grind sound from the trubo, you get it when you spool up the turbo but you're waiting on a balanced throttle. Often get it mid corner/exit at certain revs. I get it every time on a certain corner on my usually route, it's a late apex and you're waiting on the throttle for a while. Gets the noise every time, goes as you get on the power. Sounds like a fairly normal turbo noise to me. i also get it when trying to kill wheel spin in 2nd- again, spooling up the turbo but waiting on the throttle. I suspect it's normal.

I've been playing with this noise today, didn't pay too much attention to it in the past because i think it's a healthy turbo noise.

It's a metallic rasp, every time you use the boost between 2 and 3k rpm. Sounds like everyone gets the same thing i'm hearing. To me, if you listen carefully, it sounds like air, resonating under pressure inside a metal pipe. I think it sounds fine, it's just a resonance coming from the turbo. I suspect VW will say something similar since they clearly all make this noise, mine does anyway and there's nowt wrong with this engine (still hasn't used any oil  )

I spent ages trying to find it, and the garage got sick of me complaining... but it seems to have gone away all on its own now I have put some miles under the wheels....

Hi guys, I've found this topic quite interesting because I picked up my brand spanking gt 2.0tsi dsg on the 14th of July. Absolutely love the car, build quality, ride etc. But after having it only 1 day I have also noticed the metallic rattling noise at low revs when accelerating between 2k 2800rpm ish. Some interesting ideas as to what it may be on here. I'd like to think this was not the sound of the particular turbo on this car while in healthy working order. Or a healthy tsi sound etc.
In my experience of car maintenance etc I would like to hope it is just a loose heat shield vibrating at a certain harmonic frequency as many have suggested already. I had something similiar on a rover mini cooper back in the day. A rattling at a certain rev range, it turned out to be a section of the down pipe that was made of braided flexible piping, just under a foot in length. I've had a quick look and noticed similar thing on the scirocco down pipe.
Has any one had a closer look at this area and the heat shields etc?
I'd like to add there are no performance issues with this noise. It just obviously sounds rubbish when driving about!!
I will let u guys know if I find a resolution.
Cheers!

Mines in with the service dept. now. Thought I might as well see what they can do even if others haven't been successful.

Got it back and here is what VW Technical had to say:
Technical background
Waste gate adjustment rod of the turbo charger rattles when accelerating.

Measure
Do not repair, the noises are construction-related and normal. There is no parts damage.

Warranty accounting instructions
This is no fault in the sense of warranty.
I guess that means that VW at least acknowledge the 'feature' but it's a shame it doesn't look like a fix is in the pipeline ( ).

and cheers mate for the feedback.. at least its a starting point. might take a look at it and see if there is anything i can do to quiet it down abit without affecting its function!! :?

think after that announcement its time to start emailing vw customer service and say how unhappy we are that nothing will seem to be done about this. Might force the issue with technical
