Agree, the history does seem a little erratic and the lack of a service book does knock a bit of confidence. However, the car itself does drive exceptionally well and being completely stock, I doubt it's had a hard life. No knocks or scrapes to be seen anywhere - Just a cracked screen and a broken fog lamp.
On a plus side, the previous owner did some digging around and managed to find some service paper work done by VW in its early years.
With the price I payed, I'm still very happy with it
As for a windscreen quote. Not had one yet, but a buddy of mine had a quote to replace the one on his E39 M5 and it was just short of £200. With similar sensors, I'd expect the same.
