I have had quite a few TDIs over the years (1.4TDi Polo, 1.9TDI Polo 100ps, 1.9TDI 130ps Golf, 2.0TDI 140ps PD Golf, 2.0TDI 170ps PD Golf), but my 2.0TDI Scirocco is the most user friendly unit.

It doesn't feel as fast as the 140 PD unit, but that's because it has a smoother power curve. The PD units gave you a massive torque surge at the low end, but had a lot of turbo lag (especially the 170). This made them feel quicker than they were, when the turbo finally kicked in, but off the line, you couldn't get enough grip in the 170 to put that power down, although it was great in the overtaking range.

The economy in the TDI is great, from only the first tankfull i'm averaging 49mpg, although this is computer indicated mpg, actual, when you manually calculate it is more like 44mpg - a discrepancy a lot of VW owners are seeing.

If you're not used to a diesel then the TDI takes some getting used to, it is so important to be in the right gear. If you're in 4th or 5th gear at less than 1500rpm, nothing happens when you put your foot down, this engine likes to be kept above 2000rpm, there is absolutely no power before the turbo kicks in.

Keeping it above 2000rpm though, and it's a very responsive engine. It's not so quick off the line, but acceleration in the overtaking range is pretty good. Not sure whether they've reined in all the low end torque surge on the 170 version that you can now order, but I don't miss the 170 Golf one bit.

If you drive this car reasonably sensibly then you should be able to average 50mpg almost on any trip once the car has put a few miles on.

I agree with maisbitt 100%, the only thing I'd like to add is the CR engine is much quieter than the previous PD versions it doesn't have so much of the diesel clatter.

I miss the low rpm pull of my Ibiza 130 TDI-PD Sport, the way it kicked at 1800 rpm in any gear. The Scirocco doesn't feel as fast, and can't match the Ibiza's mpg.

There's no doubting the TDI-CR is a more sophisticated package, but I believe it's a TDI designed for petrol drivers.

I test drove an AUDI A4 140 TDI CR today on the freeway (the same engine as the roc), and I was very impressed with the smoothness of the engine.

Wanted to test drive a TDI CR engine before I order my TDI 170 ROC - now i am convinced, its the perfect engine for me

Mines a compay car, so no option of taking a petrol version.

I got the 140 GT and it's an abosolute hoot.
Previous car was a Saab 93 Vector Sport 150, and it was nowhere near as much fun as this!

I test drove an AUDI A4 140 TDI CR

My dad has had that for an year almost and the engine has ran in and become even smoother, quieter, torqier and more frugal! Overtaking is done on 6th with ease, very quiet on highways, avg consumption - high 40s! It's far better than the TDI 130PD for sure. Test drove a Roc 1.4TSI, which was disappointing in comparison with the TDI. Personally, I feel that diesels are better buys for everyday driving nowadays.

Oil consumption depends a lot on the run in - TDI's like gentle but varied driving to run in - do it this way and you won't use much oil.

I once made the mistake of running my car in on a 700 mile round trip sat at 75mph on the motorway - that car (140TDI GT Golf, 55Reg) used a litre of oil every 2000 miles.

My last car, a 170TDI GT Sport Golf didn't use a drop between services.

So far, at 900 miles, the Scirocco hasn't used any oil either, although I was very impressed to get an indicated trip average of 57mpg on an 80 mile round trip predominantly at 80mph on dual carriageway.

One slight downer about the CR TDI - it doesn't sound 1/2 as savage as the 170PD unit when it goes above 3000rpm.

Jacktherat - the ride on the Scirocco is lightyears ahead of the crashy and harsh ride my 170 Golf had. There's probably a reason why VW fit ACC as standard in the UK - the ride! I've driven a MK6 Golf GT TDI on 18" wheels and although it's a little better than the MK5 Golf on 17" rubber, it's nowhere near the ride on a Scirocco. The Scirocco is firm but pliant, it really does damp out all those potholes.

The worst thing about the Golf was the fear of giving full throttle in anything less than 3rd gear. There just wasn't enough grip to use that power from a standstill - the wheelspin in mine if you floored it in 2nd at 20mph was like driving over a pile of bricks.

The 140CR doesn't feel that much slower than a 170PD through the gears, you'll just have to change down a bit more (the 140 hasn't got the 170's poke in 6th gear).

It would be a crime for any potential TDI owners to not order it in GT spec, you get £1400 worth of specced extras for £1000, and those 18" Interlagos are infinitely better looking than the standard spec 17" ones (i'd pay for them if i'd got a 1.4TSI). Hopefully VW won't drop the 140TDI from GT Spec with the arrival of the 170.

I went from a 55 plate 2.0TDI A3 Sport (dsg) to my Roc 2.0TDI GT (dsg) I don't feel like I drive the Roc any diff than I did the Audi (spirited, lol). However the car as a whole feels much more responsive and is a joy to drive.

The downside is my average MPG has bottomed out at a new low. My daily commute is 5 miles of A road, 28 miles of motorway and duel c/w and a couple of miles in town. The Audi returned 45-48 on the mfd where as the Roc has only broke 40 once. The figures may need adjusting slightly to allow for the usual discrepancies. Also relevent may be the distance covered figures. the Audi generally did about 430 to a tank now i'm down at 380.

Not a complaint at all as i know if i tootle around at 55mph i'll get high figures, just not found it as economical as I thought it may have been.

Milages: A3 65000 in 3 years
Roc 7000 in 4 months

I think (from my experiences) that the common rail engine has the greatest potential for good economy, although if it is driven hard, it is thirstier than the PD unit driven in the same way.

In my previous 140 and 170PD Golfs, there didn't seem to be much penalty for driving it hard or normally (the 170 did 44mpg driven hard or 46mpg driving very gently). The common rail unit has given me 57mpg on an 80mph dual carriageway trip, and also 42mpg driving it fairly heavy-footed (not too heavy actually, i've been giving it a gentle run in) on a busy 10 mile commute to work.

The common rail unit seems less thirsty when crawling along in traffic also.

TDI-CR ? If you want a good all rounder that lookes good and gives you great fuel consumption then its the one to have.Very underated car that most petrol heads would turn their nose up at.

VW - Can we please have chrome tail pipes please ?

i couldnt agree more..great all rounder [140TDI], smooth,quiet,strong engine&plenty fast in realworld conditions.sport pack in ireland is alcantara suede seats [catchup] they call it,in anthracite+black headlining,alu pedals,privacy glass,tailored mats,all looks lovely.i also got mudflaps[v effective],premium sill guards&chrome tailpipe trims.Salsa red is most definately the best colour of all when gleaming polished with 18'' interlagos.unbelievable looks&comments ALL of the time.

Overall very impressed with the car (less so the paint, but that's a different story).

I traded across from the 1.9 TDi PD-115, which returned and average of 51mpg on my daily commute.

Still with under 2000 miles on the clock, so I generally still warm the engine at idle for ~5mins before setting off; I'm using BP Ultimate diesel (115 p/l ), but the car is returning 53.6 mpg.

Unlike some others, my calculations agree within 0.1mpg of the onboard computer (it shows 53.7mpg).

My journeys are generally 70% easy motorway followed by minor A-roads at <40mph.

The best thing for Your engine is to start right away, without idleing, and run it at medium RPM.
That way it is the oil pressure is higher and it produces more surplus heat. Then it is quicker to reach working temperature.

True, running the car at idle isn't necessarily a good idea, I mention it because without doing that I'd be getting more than 53.6mpg!

In my case, I live in a village with a winding 1:4 hill between me and the motorway so there would be an immediate strain on the engine....
