Should I get rid of it?

Post by Smeemi »

I bought a VW Scirocco 59 Reg 160bhp in November 2016 after writing off my 122bhp. I then lost my license, got it back 6 months later.

Within 2 weeks of driving it and 1 day after putting a £1.5K sound system in it, engine dies, turned out that cylinder 3 piston cracked and low compression. Take it into a garage... took them 2 months to fix it and cost me £2200.

Few weeks later I'm driving it and can't go above 3K revs... take it back to the garage... turns out that part of my throttle body needs to be replaced, the flap that signals the turbo to supercharger. This cost me £350.

I then think everything is sorted, what can go wrong... so I stupidly buy some nice wheels as well!! Another £1400 and also an R32 exhaust £600.

2 weeks later, engine light comes on and some noise it seems from the timing chain... RAC come and its crankshaft/camshaft correlation error. This was like 2 weeks ago but I haven't had that error code since. What do you guys think I should do? This car was previously stolen (didn't know this when I bought it, as apparently it doesn't come up under the "stolen" check if it has had a numberplate change).

Only 38K miles apparently when I bought it but just problem after problem.

What do I do?!?!? Sell or keep?

Hehehe, I know I feel like I am the unluckiest person when it comes to cars.

Really feel like selling it but ive added so many extras to it which I won't get anything for :/

How much do you think its worth (assuming its working all fine!)? 3K miles after the rebuild.

Edit: Forgot to add, after putting on the wheels, first 10 seconds of driving I scrapped one of them and their Matt Bronze so I can't touch them up... >_<. Luck luck luck or just me?

Yeah I'd call it shit luck and lesson learnt! :fall:

Those engines are prone to issues as far as I have read.

I think I'd keep it now

Hehe, thanks guys! I'm going to keep it, you're right it'll be stupid to sell after putting that amount of money in - just hope no other problems *touch wood*.

Really enjoying the car at the moment, will post some pics of it in a bit to show what the "investment" paid for!!

Yep, I think you should keep it after all that pain etc!
Bit concerned about your garage taking 2 months to pull a piston tho? Also, even more concerned that you got a crankshaft/camshaft correlation error however as you say if it hasn't come back, may have been a sensor connection problem bearing in mind your garage would have had the head off and numerous thing disconnected :)

Wish you luck for the future!

Maybe you can contact a priest to take the curse from the car ;)
That's a lot of bad luck!

I was genuinely thinking that. Car's cursed.

More bad luck today.. went out for a quick drive to take some photos to post it online here.

Scrapped another wheel to shreds and their Matt Bronze so impossible to colour match

Why not, you can get a small paint pen color coded at a body shop so you can touch up the damage.

These are the ones - think ill be able to just touch them? One of them has a scruff for a quarter of the edge of the rim.

Sounds like an absolute nightmare, however like you said if you tried to sell, you have a minority market because of the engine rebuild.

Another problem with my car...

Temperature gauge flashing red light, topped up coolant, 2 weeks later light comes on again..

Turned out to be a coolant leak and water pump needs replacing.

Another £350 on this piece of shit.

Unfortunately the 160ps 2009's were lemons....lots of revised parts in a 2010:

-water pump / supercharger clutch
-camshaft adjuster
-injectors
-coil packs
-HP fuel pump
-piston rings...not that made much difference to the chocolate pistons.

Thank you for that list, should have researched more before buying it. I had a 2010 Scirocco prior to this one but wrote it off. ;[

I think I've changed all those parts now, so hopefully it should be ok!!

I hope for you.

I'm glad I didn't get a 1.4 when I was searching for a rocco.

Is the 2.0 TSI (2009) more robust?

Yes it generally is more robust than the 1.4 twincharger but can suffer 2 issues, one of them serious. It is a must that the chain tensioner is updated to the newer version.
The other issue, less serious is the water pump leaking - again the latest revision solves this problem.

With the chain tensioner there is a way to check what version you have: " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If you are going to do this check, be sure to buy a new replacement plug rather than using the old one - otherwise you may get oil leaks.
