DSG or No DSG?

I’m going to be looking for a TDI next month or early next year. I’ve heard some horror stories & been told to stay clear from DSG. Now this is only one person I’ve spoken to so not sure what the general opinion is.
I’m ideally looking to get a 170. There’s a lot of DSG’s for sale & hardly any manuals.

What are people’s opinions & what-should I look out for?

270k km without any problems with dsg. I really love it.
But if you don't drive a lot of mileage a manual is also fine.

Drive both and get the one you prefer.

If that turns out to be DSG then make sure the oil and filter have been done at least every 40k miles. The main failures tend to be the Mechatronics Unit which is expensive to replace but there are companies who can repair them / refurbish them for reasonable money.

DSG all the way.

Horror stories are very few and far between compared to the hundreds of thousands of units they've sold.

I've had DSG's now since 2009 and love it. It's actually the best of both worlds. When you're in traffic the auto option takes away the need to keep pumping the clutch. When you want to get on it you can use the paddles and it's very involving. I wouldn't go back and sales are steadily tipping away from manuals year on year.

my TDI 170 has DSG and ive had no problems. tho i'm sure i'm due a service on it.

My dad's golf GTI's with DSG as well have had no problems either

Dont think DSG diesels pop.

I think DSG is better.. and I have a manual LOL

both have benefits, but I'll be picking DSG for my next car 100%

I have manual and always will unless I physically cant change gear someday.

DSG will beat a manual car of the same spec down the 1/4 mile for instance.

There is less driver input generally, I like the engineering behind it and it is very popular and reliable also, just not the amount involvement you have with the car.

Practical but boring, not for driving fanatics if you ask me. It is doing it for you. (You don't see automatic gearboxes in Fast & Furios lol).[emoji42][emoji58]

I have a 2.0 tsi dsg scirocco and it’s fantastic, when you feel like having a good drive put it in sports mode and hear it pop, I also love using the paddles aswell. I would struggle going back to a Manual! Just keep your dsg box serviced [emoji3]

You’re right, no auto boxes in Fast & Furious. They do have manuals with 47 gears though

That’s exactly my initial opinions on DSG. I always enjoyed driving the car. If you get a good gear change then it’s you that’s done that not the car.
However I can see both sides and the fact that with the DSG the car knows when best to change gear. However does that take the fun out of driving as it’s simply foot down and go?! [emoji848]

I currently have a 2.0 TSI manual and love it. The pops are great fun. However going to diesel I may miss those pops haha

Ah ok. Good to hear from someone who has had them a while and not had any issues. It’s easier driving as well I suppose but can use the paddle shifts if you want to change the gears yourself

Do manuals also pop? I thought that something that only the DSG did

I've had a manual before upto 205,000 miles and now I have one... I kept dithering between the two but o thought the manual would be more engaging... I loved the thought of having launch control on the dsg... at the end of the day I do long miles and to ensure I don't nod off so easily I decided to stick with the manual

I am fortunate to have both (not on the same car of course!), but we also own a Polo GTI DSG. When I first drove it, I did feel detached from the car and not involved with the driving experience in anyway. After originally owning a Fiesta ST, it felt a bit boring. However... Once I started using the DSG properly, and switching the lever into manual mode and using the paddles, it brings on a completely different driving dimension altogether, and I love it. Once back in traffic, just move it back to auto and let the car do all the heavy work.

My Scirocco is manual, and it is great to switch to that and get a real old school driving experience again. My next car though, will be DSG all the way, and that is the way technology is going anyway.
