Air Con High Pressure on 2.0 TSI
Air Con High Pressure on 2.0 TSI
Hi guys, firstly hello to you all.
I have a VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI 2009 that the air con doesn't work on. It hasn't worked since I've had the car for around 2 months but haven't really needed it until the last few days since the weather has been absolutely boiling.
I thought the gas just needed topping up but when I connect an pressure gauge it's coming back as high pressure. When the air con is on, the light is on however when I left it on today to get a reading of the temperature it came back as 43, so obiously not working and pretty much feels the same as the heat when the fan is on.
Any ideas what's up? Is it a matter of letting out the gas until it comes down? Anyone had this issue before?
Thank you.

Welcome to the forum, sounds like it could be the compressor which won't cheap to replace. I could be wrong though.

Ah man, what a ball ache. I didn't realise this was such an issue with VAG! It seems there is an alternative compressor to what was originally put in that is supposed to be better. Does anyone know the part number for this? I'll try and get a cheaper one on ebay and get an independent garage to fit. Thanks

There is actually a common problem with the compressor pulley, well the plate that is bolted to it and the spline wearing away therefore not engaging the compressor. I know this for a fact as its exactly what happened to mine around 1 month ago and many others on VW forums. This is the replacement part:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Air-Condition ... SwExJXodbZ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I ended up replacing the compressor with a 2nd hand unit and having it regassed... but I should have stuck with my gut feeling that this was the cause. If you have access to some air-tools you should be easily able to replace the part without the need to take the compressor (although its a tight squeeze) off as all youll need is a torx head (T20/25 i think) and there is only 4 screws. I say air tools because they provide enough torque to undo the bolt without the need of clamping the pulley and potentially causing damage.
If you take that spline plate off and you can see it has been worn you know your problem, if its not worn then yeah it may be a duff compressor but id put money on its the plate. I wouldn't take it to VW as they completely reject this as an issue, plus charge £75 quid to tell you what you know, but any decent VW specialist will pretty much confirm it as a fault.

Thanks for this info, greatly appreciated. I don't suppose you're in or around the Bristol area? I'd happily pay for you to do this if you could? I don't have any access to air tools and to be honest wouldn't feel comfortable doing something like this. I pooed myself connecting the pressure gauge

Unfortunately not mate, i'm from Wigan. Just to give you some more insight I've added some images below showing the spline on the compressor drive shaft and on the pulley plate. The female spline is completely worn on the pulley plate, so when the pulley turns, the drive shaft is never connected so doesn't rotate.
If you take it to a decent local garage you trust and mention the issue i'm sure they wouldn't mind taking it off for you as an inspection, its not a big job. When they take it off and you can see the spline worn like mine in the image buy a replacement and just get them to fit it. I don't imagine a garage would charge you more than an hours labour to do it.You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Yep. It will be the compressor clutch bolt ... had the same issue. Bought the kit of eBay and fixed it myself in half hour saving the £800+ VW wanted for a new compressor!
Basically the bolt either loosens or falls out ... the compressor clutch then shears its splines that locates on to the compressor.
It's easy to tell by putting a torch down the side of engine (cambelt area) and looking for the bolt on the end of the pulley. It should turn at same speed as pulley when engine is running.
Mine just needed a new centre bolt to fix the issue. Others have needed to replace the clutch completely. Either is straight forward to do.
It's a known fault with Delphi air con compressors.

Aston, thanks for the images mate, it's reassuring.
OCD, did you need any air tools to get it off or did you manage just to use a torx bit and wrench? Did you get it on a ramp or squeeze underneath? Cheers.

Re: Air Con High Pressure on 2.0 TSI
If its loose already you wont need air tools as the other three are offset so shouldn't have an issue with pulley rotation. I know mine was still quite tight when taking it off but I had the luxury of the compressor being out of the car. Id give it a go with a socket set and see if you can get it off to check. When putting your new shear plate on, might be worth using some threadlock to make sure the centre bolt doesn't loosen afterwards and have the same issue again.
Ill have a check tonight and see what torx sizes they are for the 4 bolts, unless OCD knows already?
I was the same VW wanted £800+ for mine and a new receiver dryer but I just got a fully working 2nd hand unit for £40 and regas cost £40 so not the end of the world, and that lovely cool air was worth it!

Ok so I've managed to get my phone in from the top and take a few pictures (attached). Which bit do I need to be looking at here? The one with the bolt in the middle and the 3 holes around the outside, are screws missing from this?

No its not that one. When I finish work later ill take a few photos for you, to guide you through it.
Its much easier to take the floor plate off under the car (4 torx screws if I remember) and access it that way. You'll need to jack up the car on the drivers side.
I'm pretty sure the compressor is sat directly underneath the alternator because it runs on the same auxiliary belt.
As I said, ill post some images later that should hopefully help.

Yes. Go in from underneath to access it ... remove the lower engine cover, driver side wheel and wheel arch liner and access is nice and easy... it is the lowest pulley on the car so under those you have shown.
I can't remember size of bolt and screw unfortunately but can take a picture of the air con clutch on the car if it helps.
