Brake change

Morning guys (long time),
I've been speaking about it for a while, but now I'm going to attempt to change my brakes (front and rear) in the next few weeks.
Been on Eurocar parts, and it seems there is more than one type of disc I can get. What is the correct disc thickness to buy? Also, as per the wind back tool for the rear piston, I hear you need one with the correct adapter! Anyone know the correct one to buy as well? Thanks.

Doesn't euro car parts take the reg no and give you specific parts for your car model? Or does it still give you more than one option?

I do know it's not the biggest one, that's 345mm by 30mm and is specific to the R.

The R is 345/310mm

I believe the GT is 288/255-6mm but just varify it with the good ol' tape measure for extra certainty.

I assumed a few ppl had changed their brakes on here, so thought I'd see.
Never really got bad advice on here, so I'd have thought we didnt have many 'idiots' on here, except if it's all changed.
Anyway, I searched the forum and saw that cuprabob had given the sizes before (312mm front and 255mm rear diameter on the 2.0tsi)

And europarts gave 3 different sizes for my reg wonder why.

Double check as I'm not always right...

Also worth checking with TPS as they often have deals on OEM brake parts and often they are not bad value.

ECP website is just a lottery and cannot be relied upon.

I did A LOT of checking before ordering my discs and pads, which included checking my car's PR code and calling up the parts desk at the local VW dealer. 312 x 25mm front and 253 x 10mm rear for my 2.0 TSI, but as above don't always rely on car part websites.

Thanks bob and cookie! I'll check with TPS actually, good idea. I've got the discs already, but can always return if they don't fit. Though, c00kie's numbers does seem to confirm that they're 312mm up front.

check out MTec disks on ebay. they usually come with Mintex pads. they do the job well for a road car

While we are here, I have a few questions:
Jacking - I'm going to be using a trolley jack. Do you guys use jack pads when using those?

Pads - couldn't get through to TPS. On ECP website, there're two pad types for fronts, one for the 288mm disc and another for 345mm.... none for 312mm is one of those compatible with the 312mm discs?

2.0 TSI is 312mm front, 255mm rear
1.4 TSI are 288mm front, 255mm rear
R is 345mm front 310mm rear.

2.0 TSI is 312mm front, 255mm rear
1.4 TSI are 288mm front, 255mm rear
R is 345mm front 310mm rear.

Better to use jackpads as the jack eats at the (jack beams)

I jack the car up then put the axle stands under the Anti lift kit mount. dont work on the jack alone obviously. if he need any more help give us a shout

No, you need the right pads for a 312mm disc.

I don't know about the 140PS, but the 170PS has 312mm front discs.

I would have thought the surface area of the pad would have been less for the 288mm disc compared to the 312mm disc. You'll soon find out when you take them apart. Compatible is a very vague term.
