Ipod - Dev. not recog.

Post by sir_rocky_o »

Anybody having problems with the ipod connections. My car's 4 weeks old with an RCD 510. My Ipod Nano (and others including an iphone 3g, ipod video and mini) all come up as Device Not Recognised on screen and yet after 10 miles down the road, the ipod works fine. Is it the lead, the RCD 510 or me!! Help please.

Are you using the dedicated iPod lead?
08/11 - 12/13 2.0 TSI R DSG, Black / Black Vienna
01/09 - 08/11 2.0 TSI GT DSG, Black / Truffle Vienna

Black is the new Black....

I've tried with both leads, media in to usb with my ipod lead and the dedicated ipod to media in lead. Both leads came with the car. Thanks for your reply

Before going back to the dealer, just plug your ipod(s) to your computer and make sure you have the latest firmware, with the case of the iPhone unless it's the 1st Gen and you haven't upgraded the firmware I cannot seem to think why that one wouldn't work in which case the cable is faulty.

PS the mini USB to USB cable to iPod will never work in any circumstance which is why there is a dedicated iPod lead supplied by VW.

i know sir_rocky_o and i've seen it in action and i had a look and all the iPods are using the latest firmwares and i even tried my iphone with the new 3.0 and it still comes up with device not recognised, its really odd too as i got it going by playing a couple of tracks on a CD then trying again, and then it sounded like the music was playing underwater! (best way i can describe it is its all wobbly and slow!) and then it might go back to normal and can even charge my iPhone!

i don't know why this is doing this and i can tell its frustrating for him as it is totally random and a PITA!

is there a new revision cable? will VW be willing to replace it?

cheers

A recent post over on 'net on the same subject suggests that there is a known fault on some units. I think it was on the part of the unit in the armrest where the cable plugs into.
He added that the dealers know about the fault and keep extra bits (of whatever the faulty part is) in stock.
The guy that posted had got this information second hand too from another forum too so it's all a bit vague but that's what was said anyway.
If you can't get any joy after updated ipod firmware etc. you may as well see what your dealer has to say about it.

Wow thats a real shame, its been faultless for me - although I can add that the statement VW make "compatible with all generations of ipod" isn't true as my 3rd Gen iPod 40GB didn't work at all, it was around the time Apple were making iPod's compatible for both FireWire and USB connections they now only support USB on the newer iPods.

I ended up buying the new nano - works a treat, sorry if this annoys ppl but fret not I'm sure a change of cable might do the trick.

Good luck

I've had my car since October and seriously no hardware issues or charging etc

There was a point where the sound was distorted when I went past Vol 13/14, however going into the settings I changed the AUX level to 1,5 instead of the 0,3 default or vice versa can't remember and that fixed it, now I have the sound up to 23/24 before it distorts but any higher than that your ears will bleed.

This 1,5 setting is now known as High, Med, Low on the newer cars which probably have had a stereo firmware update.

There is a thread about it somewhere as I helped someone in the past resolve their iPod issues but can't find the topic now as it was a while back - forum needs a better search/user filter criteria - I'm not taking anything from it, but gone are the days where we had 100 users, 300 topics and things were really simple to find, the member no. now reflects the hard work and time Kev and Andy have put in the forum

Update on "device not recognised" when ipod(s) have been attached via both leads. Car went into dealer today. They checked everything out and told me there have been 2 bulletins from VW regarding software issues. I've got to take car back next for 2 days while they upload to VW and sort the problem in the system. When I got my car back after they had it for 2 hours, now even memory stick prompts "dev. not recog" message. Hey ho!!

Hi,

Not sure if this is the place to ask the question but have any of you managed to connect a 1st Gen iPod Touch (16Gb) to their Scirocco? Only got the car last Thursday and I have managed to connect my 3G iPhone and a old iPod Nano but I'm having no joy with the iPod Touch.

Any help or pointers appreciated!

Cheers!

Hi, I have just collected a used March 2009 Scirocco TSi and am having difficulty getting my ipod Classic 160GB to work via the mutli-media cable in the arm rest.

The car came with a single black cable which plugs at one end into the car's multi media socket in the armrest, and on the other end, has a USB 'socket' - I think this comes as standard with the car. I have tried plugging my white Apple cable to conect the ipod to the car's black cable. Whilst the radio knows something is connected and the ipod is charging, the radio screen shows 'Device not recognised'.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to purchase a second cable from VW to connect to the ipod rather than using the white Apple one which comes with the ipod?

Would much appreeciate any help please.
Cheers

This won't work. AFAIK the scriocco is meant to come with two leads, one is a MDI to USB lead, and one is an MDI to ipod dock connector lead. The usb lead is only for plugging in flash drives and the like that have MP3s on them

The ipod lead is the one you want, that will plug into an ipod or iphone. If your seller didn't include one, I think you can get them from VW dealers for £20.

Thanks for that.

I have the price list effective from 1.5.2009 and that states as standard specification "MDI with USB and iPod connection cables". My car was registered 31st March 2009.

I am wondering, has the iPod cable always been 'standard equipment' (in which case I will ask the suplying VW dealer to supply one, as it is missing) or has it only become standard equipment more recently and so my car never had one?? In which case I will need to buy one.

Cheers

Hi
I am the original post for this problem of "device not recognised". In the end my local dealer replaced the wiring to the centre console and since then everything has been fine, hope this helps, best contact your dealer.

It's always been standard but the iPod one has to come from the parts department rather than arriving with the car.
