Hello there, new to this forum and just brought a 2010 candy white scirocco 2.0 tdi 170 manual. looking for tips to keep DPF clean and problem free. I plan to give the rocco a blast on the motorway every sunday for around 30 minutes is this a good idea? what do you guys do to keep the DPF burning off that excess soot, as during the week monday - friday i will do short journeys to and from work, school runs etc.
New to all this dpf stuff as I've come from petrol car background, noticed my scirocco was idling around the 1000rpm mark, whats the best thing to do whilst assuming its doing a regen? i had the yellow DPF light come on a few days ago also, luckily i was on the motorway at the time so i just did the 2-2500rpm for 20 minutes thing and the light has gone off, but its still idling high at 1000rpm, fans aren't running when i turn off the car so could that be a battery issue and not a regen?
all help and input regarding the DPF side of things for this car would be highly appreciated as I'm totally alienated by the DPF at the moment.

Best way is to buy a polar Fis pf03 so you can see the soot and ash load at any time.
Then you know when its time for a longer driver to perform the regen. When a regeneration is occuring let it finish and check that the oil temperature has dropped before turning of the engine. The high rpm is not always caused by a regeneration but also by high alternator load/ electricity use.

I had that much hassle with the dpf on my Golf 170GT that I got it deleted and had a full remap while it was on the dyno , ended up with a useable car after that ! Before I had this done the only other way round it I found was to take it for a good blast as soon as the light came on the dash , if I didn't do it straight away then it was limp mode a short while after grrrr

Your Golf would have been a PD engine which never really worked well with the DPF.
The common rails are much better.
As Roy said using diagnostic tools or Polar FIS will show you dpf load.
often people get annoyed with dpf but take no personal responsibility for buying the wrong car / engine for their needs
if you do lots of town journeys then a DPF fitted tdi is not suitable for your needs...!!! basically you brought the wrong engine.
the easiest way would be to have the DPF smashed out and welded up. this keeps OEM looking downpipe so it's fine for MOT and a remap.
get this done by a speciallist, not a flash and go place that are so easy to find.
if you are based around the south of UK i can pass you my guys details. he did dpf delete and stage 1 tune on my friends car and got 209bhp.
