Snapped rear shock / Damper

Post by gingerscotsman »

Has anyone ever had the top of your rear shock snap? I had a very worrying knocking start from the rear of the car today. I went poking around and found I could remove the top of the rear shock from its mounting cup :eyepop: ! No visible threads on the end of the shock whatsoever. I guess these are still in the cup. Very concerned about driving it now so I have borrowed another car until I get it repaired.

Anyone know the going rate for a electronic adjustable damper from VW? Looks straight forward enough to the home mechanic to replace it. Do I need to do both?

That does sound very worrying. Sadly a rear shocker from TPS or a dealer is around £220. As I understand it, it is only available through those channels.

It's recommended they are done in pairs, although in warranty claims they are happy to only change the defective unit:-)

Yep - they are currently £225 each (inc VAT) from VW for a rear electronic adjustable damper.

Had cause to ring round a few places for a mate looking one of these for a Passat CC (guess it's the same part) and VW were actually the cheapest place and the only one to have it in stock. Was quoted around £225 from memory.

Oohya! That's a fair amount for a damper. Suppose that's the price of the electronic trickery. I'll give VW a ring tomorrow and get a quote.

Got both from VW for £405 inc VAT. Seems the branch I use have made a change meaning you may no longer pay over the phone, which is quite annoying. I had to get away early from work, but they gave me some discount as a result :) They shoud have been £225 as Paddy_R says. On 2 day delivery as they were not in stock.

Not looking forward to doing this in this cold weather! It will need to be in the dark after work too. Brrr....
