Petrol registered as diesel: easy fix or painful?

Post by Billc »

The other day I spotted a Roc for sale that looked rather nice. It's only a Jan 16 with 5k on the clock through a VW dealer and for a very attractive price. Almost too attractive! I checked the DVLA and although it is a TSi 220hp it's registered as a 2.0 diesel - although the emissions are correct for a petrol 220hp.

I'm sure it's easy enough to get the V5 altered? My concern would be that in the process of getting it changed all the insurance databases will have it listed incorrectly, as will any other database out there. I should imagine that can get really rather awkward?

Anyone have experience of similar? TIA.

Back in 2011 a large number of diesels, including mine, were registered as automatic instead of manual, however with the correct emissions value and as such correct VED.

As you say it comes up wrong in all the insurance database look ups as they are all referred to DVLA. I get round this by not using them and putting the car in manually.

For me it's not a big inconvenience therefore I've never bothered trying to get it corrected.

Yep, I see what you're saying Cuprabob but since nobody trusts insurance companies when it comes to claims - should the one I described get nicked then who are they going to believe as to what it actually was? I dunno, having never experienced similar before it certainly makes me just a bit wary.

I had a Mk2 Scirocco some years ago (it was an 1985 B plate) that was registered as auto, but was actually manual. All it took was a letter to DVLA, but this was back in about 1994....
