Just to update a point made earlier on this thread.

To get to the pistons on this engine, its a 10 hour job....having recently done this job myself, it took me 15 hours due to a few stuck bolts and also the fact i don't have a garage to work in, nor a lift.
This engine is an absolute bitch to get to the cylinder block, nearly everything has to come out/off - and that's a hell of a lot of ancillaries for this twincharged engine.
Some stuff very awquard to remove with the engine still in, and that's with the VW workshop guides showing me how to dissassemble in a certain way - try any other way and some things will just not come out.

This is the list of stuff that has to be removed:

-Coil packs
-PCV & N75 Turbo boost control
-Air filter box
-Upper charge pipes
-Brake booster hose, evap solenoid hoses
-Supercharger air control flap assembly
-Throttle body
-Intake manifold
-Fuel rail
-Lower charge pipes & intercooler hoses
-Side charge pipe
-Coolant hoses & brackets around thermostat area
-Thermostat
-Water pump / SC Clutch
-SC insulation housing
-SC Tensioner
-SC pulley & belt
-Alternator Tensioner
-Crankshaft pulley
-Front exhaust pipe
-Catalyst
-Turbocharger with exhaust manifold
-Alternator
-Oil sump
-Evap canister
-Coolant expansion tank
-Headlight Washer filler
-Left engine mount
-Timing chain cover
-Timing chain & chain tensioner
-Camshaft head
-Lifters/Rockers
-Cylinder Head
-Conrod caps
-Piston(s)!

That's why the VW dealership charges over £800 to do an inspection of the pistons, it would be a further £1000 to put it back together!

Yes, absolutely true...my VW specialist charged me some 1000 euros for both disassembly and assembly, as opposed to 2000+ euros had it been done by an authorized dealer.
