If you can push your budget for one with a newer 184 TDI's, they're even quicker and more fuel efficient, at least compared to my old mans octy 2 VRS with the 170 tdi.

It's a great engine.

Thanks for all your help so far.

CleanDiesel, budget is around £12k sadly so a decent 170 is still a stretch!

Looks like the 170 TDI is what I'm after. Just a shame they seem to be rare as hens teeth? Plenty of 140's kicking about, but not so much the 170's.

Sorry for the stream of newb questions:

On some photos I've seen there's a row of three(?) dials above the nav in the centre of the dash, but on others it doesn't seem to be there. Is this a pop-up feature or is it only available on some models? What exactly are the dials? Cheers

The 3 dials are on the latest face-lift versions. They display boost, oil temperature and something else I can't remember.

On the pre-facelift 170 diesel you get the oil temperature on the MFD.

Facelift is from Model Year 2015, which is cars sold after Summer 2014.

VW's model year changes half way through the calender year. Changeover is Build Week 23

Perfect.

Thanks for all your help!

So now I know what I'm after, time to to step up the search for a 170TDI 2.0 GT

I want it to have nav, but that's not a big issue because you can buy the head unit and just plug it in right?

It's almost plug and play haha. You will need a Nav unit and a antenna (which I left in my glove box!). You will need someone with VCDs (have an ask on here) to code in all the functions on the MFD etc.

Not trying to put you off it though, it really is a simple job :D

Spot on, sounds an easy enough job.

Why do 170 variants seem so rare to get? 140's are plentiful but a 170 with low mileage seems as rare as rocking horse shit looking round Autotrader, Pistonheads & eBay!

You have to remember that most people choose the diesel option for economy and tend to do higher than average miles. Based on that I guess that directs people towards the 140 which with Bluemotion is also cheaper to tax and also means low mileage examples are rare.

Fair enough, so it's finding someone who chose the Diesel as a compromise but still wanted a bit more power :)

With regards to the 140 version, is a good remap taking it up to around 170 likely to be as good as the 170bhp version standard?

Struggling to find a decent example of a 170 within my price range (£12k) with heated leather. Plenty of 140's around that are fully specced up, cheaper tbh too so money left over for a remap.

Thoughts? :) Obviously there's the point that if I wanted even more power than a remapped 170 could push 200, but lets work on the basis that 170 will be enough :)
