Timing belt change on tdi 170 model, who's done it?

Post by cjl_rocco88 »

Hi just wanted to ask around n see how many folk have done their belt change at the specified mileage/ time.
As a former mechanic I appreciate the gamble but don't believe that time is a factor in the deterioration of the belt (within reason).
I have a 2010 170 tdi that has 59k on it now and is 5 and a half years old. So technically it's 6 months overdue a belt but I feel if it's meant to last 120k or whatever it is, over 100k anyway, then it doesn't need done yet.
I was going to change it at 80k but tbh I probably won't have it by then as I only do about 10k a year.

Any thoughts are welcome chaps.

As you say it's a gamble. You pays your money, you takes your chance.

Not heard of any snappingnon these engines.

The 5 year interval is a VW UK recommendation and not one from the factory, as can be seen from the service booklet, which only gives the 120k mileage limit.

Thanks cuprabob, I thought that! There is nothing from VW to say it needs done until that mileage.
Plus if VW say 120000 miles the belt itself is prob good for 160k or somethin as that was my experience with vehicle manufacturers. They will buy belts in from someone and they will have x longevity then the car manufacturer will chop a bit off as a factor of safety.
Thinking bout trading in for a polo gti in the next few months. I love my rocco but not willing to buy another when so little has changed. And a golf is too rich for me ATM.

I had mine done at 5 years (about 55k miles) including tensioner and water pump. I reasoned that at least if my car imploded between year 5 and 6 I would be able to say that I did everything possible recommended if it ended up as court action. It was about £500 or something like that at the main dealer.

I had mine done last year, did it at the same time as an overdue dsg service lol. They cost just shy of £500 I think

Yeah that sound about right, I'm sure last summer when it supposed to get done it was 440 with the water pump getting done too, or maybe it was 440 without it I can't remember. Just a pisser cos it's due a major service this year and may well need work for its mot. :(
Still, I love the car so makes it slightly less painful.
I think it would be fine but it's too big a gamble, 500 job risking a what 5000 engine!?

For the sake of £500, don't fuck about. If it does go the engine is scrap.

I've just booked mine in to get done, bought the part myself as it was much cheaper. £145.59 from euro car parts. Although mines the 140 not the 170, i cant imagine the belt is different though. let me know if you want the link.

Make sure the tensioner is changed and personally I would fit a new water pump too.

Hi I've just done my belt and it is different from the 140 in being the 170 belt is wider as I had both kits sent out which include water pump and I paid 150.

It’s not normally the belt that fails. It the idler pulley bearings or water pump that go then causing belt failure.

Get a few indie quotes then ask the main dealer to price match.

I did this on my last car Audi A5 which they normally charge £750. Got them to match a local indie (must be genuine parts) for £450.

Worth asking[emoji6][emoji106]

Personally i think 131k is way too much.
I would keep it on 112k and 5 yrs maximum.
