Dash/MFD dead

Post by RobTriskele »

Hi everyone.

I'm a fairly new Scirocco owner and am really enjoying my new car. I've had 8 months of trouble free fun.

However.

This morning I went to the car, unlocked it, got in, key in ignition while farting about with the seatbelt, turned key, engine fired up and stopped almost immediately. It was fairly cold this morning but not frosty, so I tried again, same. Tried the third time and happened to notice the dash/MFD was dead, nothing. I do have power to heater controls, radio, interior and exterior lights.

Now, I've done some snooping around the Internet and it seems that it may be a problem relating to the dash/MFD pod which is where the immobiliser is situated, seems a reasonable theory.

So, has anyone else had this problem and solved it without spending a complete fortune? If thats what it takes then I have no quarms taking it to a dealer to be fixed but I'm wondering if theres a simple solution before I take that path.

Thanks in advanced

The RFID reader is located in the ignition switch. First thing I would do is try the spare key to rule out a fault with the key fob

Also worth giving the fuses a once over too.

Good shout with the key, unfortunately same, all the fuses check out with a continuity tester too.

Apparently I this issue is cause by a defective processor which forms part of the electronics behind the clocks. Mines been sent away to a company called Cartronix to have a new processor fitted for £150. All immobiliser and odo information is kept so you don't have to get VW to reprogram anything. It's due back tomorrow so with any luck everything should be tickity boo!

I have the same issue with my Scirocco 2010 GT 2.0 TDI.

I can use my key to unlock and lock the car but can't seem to do anything when key is in ignition. The cluster is completely dead.

Let me know if the issue is resolved. I might have to send mine too then

I spoke to VW initially and all they said was to bring it in for diagnostics. This along with paying to get it recovered or towed put me off to start with.
The module is back in my car and everything is back to normal.

Highly recommend Cartronix, the guy I spoke with on Monday was confident and knowledgable. They turned my clocks around within a few hours and has them back in the post the same day they received them. Great service.

Where abouts are they located?

The problem which I'm having is I can lock and unlock the doors, all interior and exterior lights operate.

Windows don't work.. neither does anything happen when I put key into ignition. Cluster is completely dead.

They're based in Waterlooville, near Portsmouth. I had issues with the windows as well so it could be a similar problem with yours. Give them a call, the guy I spoke to knew exactly what was up when I described the symptoms.

Starter motor? What has that in common with a dead instrument cluster?

My starter motor had a slight crack on it some how. So I had assumed it had something to do with it. Later found out that power of the main electrics in a Scirocco comes from behind the instrument cluster. So is that is dead then majority of electrics and ignition is pretty much dead too.

Sent mine of for repair. Fingers crossed it solves the issue otherwise I'll be playing the guessing game...

Received it back. Still no power to cluster. I have rang cartronix and they have advised to check fuses again. I might just have to take it to a vw specialist

Very very long time lurker with a 2008 2.0 Scirocco. I just had to sign in to say that this thread has saved me so much time and effort. Called Cartronix and Tony confirmed that my issue sounds like the instrument cluster, advised me of prices and even guided me on how to take it off (Which is surprisingly simple).

I am just waiting for they form to be emailed and I too will be sending mine off for repair.

Just want to say thanks to you all
