Air vents smell like sick?

Post by Abhatoa »

Hey guys. My air vents in my car smell of a sick smell when the weather is wet and the car is left stood over night or something.

What could this be?

Perhaps you need your aircon regasing which can get rid of any bacteria in the system. Or check the cabin filter underneath the glove box.

I've just got a new pollen filter. Are they hard to fit? Hopefully this cures it.

If you don't use your air con regularly bacteria can build up and cause the smell you describe. Although a new pollen filter will do no harm it's unlikely to cure the issue. Get your local dealer to do an air con refresh for around £25 or an aircon service for around £75.

There are DIY solutions available as liable from Halfords bit I don't know how effective they are.

A regas replaces the refrigerant in the working side of the air con. If the air coming out of the vent smells it's not going to be affected by a regas. A regas is needed when the refrigerant has leaked out and the air con doesn't get cold any more.

The posters issue is with the air side of the air con which needs to be disinfected. This is what is referred to above as a refresh. They put the air con on full and on recycle put an aerosol in the footwell, fire it off and close the doors. The aerosol stuff is sucked into the air con and circulated through it disinfecting as it goes.

At the moment my A/C doesn't actually work. It's not worked since summer and didn't really think to fix it until next summer as I'll hardly use it during winter! Where can I get this refresh done? Or buy the product so I can do it myself?

I've changed the filter last night so let's see what that does. The old one was full on black and full of dirt.
