So my water pump is leaking
A week or so ago I made a thread about my coolant leaking...
Well my neighbour who is a VW specialist mechanic offered to take a look. We jacked her up and started stripping, and found the water pump to be leaky as suspected.
How much would VW charge typically for replacing this?
My neighbour has offered to get a non-VW replacement that he says is more reliable for £32+VAT, and then some bunce for his time to fit it Thursday night. Probably offer him £100 + parts cost?
What do people think about the non-VW part? He also offered to get a VW one if I wanted.
Cheers!

If changing the pump you might as well change the timing belt / tensioner / pulley at the same time as you will need to loosen the belt off ... what's the mileage on the car?
Gates do a full kit for £110. OE pump from ECP for around £35.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that. The car is at 54k so probably worth doing.

You're engine is chain driven!! No timing belt! The water pump is driven by a small auxiliary belt on the gearbox side of the engine. As for parts that's really upto you. I generally try and use oe parts, you can buy them cheaper from places like tps.

Yes! You're right. I just googled in fact and came up with this:
http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75491" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Which is a great DIY and of course shows it's on it's own belt that is easy to get off and on.

Re: So my water pump is leaking
Mine failed as pictures below, replaced thermostat, gaskets and a few other bits at the same time while stripped down and total cost was about £250 from memory by my local mechanic. Had to wait for some bits from germany as none in this country. Original part is plastic and prone to failure after going through loads of hot and cold cycles. If you look closely you can see a tiny bit of plastic missing from the rectangular shaped hole

Re: So my water pump is leaking
Id always go OEM spec on parts, I had a water pump fitted on a golf mk4 whilst the belt was being done a few years ago, the garage used an after mkt version with a brass impeller wheel.
6k down the road the impeller started slipping on the shaft & resulted in the job being redone with oem spec this time, what seemed like a saving at the time meant the job was twice the price.

Sweet, so i'm potentially on for a bit of a bargain if I offer my neighbour a cheeky £100 sheets plus the parts cost. I'm sure if it fails down the road we can look at it again.

The accessory belt on my 2009 Scirocco 2.0 TSI is seriously worn and will need a replacement at the earliest. It has done more than 137K Km - a very impressive service life.Gaz r wrote:You're engine is chain driven!! When I looked around the pulleys I could not find the water pump. Now I know the water pump is at the gear box side. Thanks Gaz, Fortunately for me I have yet to run into water pump issue at 137K Km. Touch wood. Looking at the diagram, apart from replacing the serpentine belt, what other parts require replacement? Tensioner?

Re: So my water pump is leaking
My 2009 Scirocco 2.0 TSI comes with the EA888 with Engine code prefix CAW0. The pulley layout and routing look identical to the diagram I posted here, driving the alternator and AC compressor only. The marking on the original belt has faded. I am unable to tell the belt type. For those who has replaced this before, is the belt for this car the 6PK1120? Thanks in advance.
