I took a look at the air filter on the Rocco last night and reckon it wouldn't hurt to change it ... so was looking at a VWR filter or similar. Turns out RAMAIR are clearing out some stock on eBay ...

£25 brand new. (I made offer of £20 and got accepted)

What's wrong with just replacing with an oem filter. Would be cheaper.
I read that these foam filters can mess up your maf.which is why I got an oem one.

Whats wrong with fitting a performance panel filter than can be cleaned and re-used rather than thrown away for an extra £6?

Foam filters messing up MAF's is internet BS at it's finest...

RAMAir / VWR / Etc... all use DRY foam ...

Panel filters having any effect on performance whatsoever is internet BS, especially on a stock setup.
You're lucky to get any gains at all with a so called 'cold air' intake let alone a panel filter.

A panel filter in a stock air box is nothing but snake oil at it's finest

I'm sure the VWR panel filter and cold air induction kit is actually an oiled foam filter!

I was always under the impression that foam filters needed to be oiledoiled to catch the finest particles. In fact I've a cleaning and re-oiling kit sitting in the shed for a foam filter (can't remember the brand though but I had it in my Clio RS200).

Suppose his must use different technology.

Also my Scooby eats MAF sensors and it's got a standard paper filer in it!

Edit: it's was a ITG filter. They supply to F1 and WRC so they know what they're doing.

Oiled foam filters such as K&N will eat your MAF and arent worth the box they're packed in. Stay away and if you have one take it off. If you're going to use a panel filter pay more go for a cotton filter. And definitely stay away from cone filters.

As I said these are dual density DRY foam filters... i.e. they can be washed in soapy water, dried off then put back in the car. They are NOT oiled. RAM-Air are very well known and have been making filters for years... I even remember fitting one to my 1993 VW Corrado VR6 a long time ago So they do know what they are doing.

Given the cost of paper filters, at £20 this pays for itself after the second paper filter replacement AND flows a little better than the standard filter. I might even log the airflow in VCDS for a laugh...

But yes, there will be no increase in power but at the cost I didn't think it would hurt in preparation for the remap that will be forthcoming shortly given the existing paper filter looks dirty.

Go and log the airflow back to back... paper filters are not as bad as people think, plus the paper ones are better at filtering out the very fine particles which are the ones you need to worry about.

I will be installing my bluefin remap soon (I have been saying this for over a year)... Will a panel filter really make a difference?! I didnt think it could have any considerable effect on power. I will change mine if there is positive evidence (I gather from this thread that they might be easy to just pull out)

It will help but won't make an enormous difference. Smoothing out the inside of your air box and putting smooth hoses on will have a bigger effect.

Put it this way it is not going to have any negative affects but when remapping a car it always good to ensure such things are A1 for maximum benefit from the map.

Well documented gains on the TSI and TFSI engines.
TDI's not so much but Darkside found a 6bhp gain with a customised intake and a foam filter.
