1.4 TSI or Diesel

Post by ScottC25 »

Hi

Returning to this forum as we are looking at buying another scirocco for my wife.
2nd car so it will do maybe 5-10,000 miles per year.

AS usual, lots of smoke and mirrors from dealers, and promises that they are doing you a favour and almost making a loss on the car, however on the finance figures, it seems to be that a 150bhp diesel can be had for around £20 per month more than the petrol model.

My thinking is that we would probably save more than this on the reduced fuel costs and cheaper road tax over the course of the year. As well as the car being more powerful and better to drive.

What are the general views on this?

Should we go for the diesel and pay the extra?

Diesels are punchy out of the box and have much potential for improvement. Also diesel fuel savings are much better than you'd expect on paper.

Having owned a 1.4 122 and experiencing just under 30 mpg around town I can't expect the twin charged unit to be any more efficient.

I would strongly recommend a diesel. Any diesel unit. They are all excellent. Also pair very well with the DSG.

I would go for the diesel option as the MPG on the 1.4 is pretty bad and you'll end up saving a lot of money on fuel

My only concern with the diesel would be the DPF if only doing short/local journeys.

For this short milage you should buy a petrol. Interior and engine heats up quicker, fuel consumption is not an issue i think? Doesn't pay out whith the increase of your taxes driving a diesel i gues?
If you dont drive highway i dont know if the dpf gets a good regeneration? You will have a lot of aborted regenerations i gues. I drive the diesel with dsg and i love it. But i drive 2 x 1 hour each day, so the engine and dpf gets Nice and hot. But it takes around 20 min to warm up the oil to running temperature. Maybe someone else who drives the tdi on short trips can give soms details? If you do buy a tdi its better to change the service intervals to shorter fixed Miles instead of long life but thats mine opinion.

Thanks folks
Whilst there would be a lot of short journeys, the car will also likely be doing 2 x 90 mile round trips a week, mostly on dual carriageways at 6-70mph

I would hope this would prevent any DPF issues occurring.

I think the better economy of the diesel is going to steer us down that route.

I can't see an option anywhere for speccing the larger screen stereo/satnav, yet it seems to be possible. Anyone have any info on this?

Cheers

OK that will be fine for the dpf. It regenerates with intervals of aprox. 400/500 miles of driving. The long trips every week will be long enough for some good regeneration and the get your oil at a good temperature. Nothing to worry about.

2.0 TSI

For 5k miles a year a diseasel is pointless, using current average fuel prices the diesel will save you a whole £355 a year on fuel. (That assumes 50MPG on diesel and 30MPG on petrol)

I assume you're leasing, so no depreciation to consider, but even when you take the tax savings into consideration, with the additional £240 a year on the lease the overall ownerships costs are going to be very close.

So that's a saving of £355 for driving something that dag-dags it's way down the road, is considerably worse for the environment, and means you have to use the dirty pump at the petrol station

2.0 TSI is much more expensive though, so thats a no go I'm afraid. My point is even at 5000 miles, its almost cost neutral, as the extra finance payments will be cancelled out by the fuel savings, and at the end of the term the diesel car will hold its value better.

Clearly a diesel hater - 58mpg against 28 mpg is a clear winner regardless of mileage done.

Performance wise both perform in different ways but are both roughly similar. On paper the 2.0 petrol will be quicker but the diesel will feel faster lower range and over taking.

So if it's cost neutral, get the petrol.

Surely if it's a lease you don't care what the resale value is at the end unless you want to buy it, as you'll give it back after your monthly payments have been made?

Other option is to get a 12 month old 2.0 TSI for the same price

Where did 58 vs 28 come from? There is no way the TSI vs TDI being driven the same way will get that big a difference in MPG. Also diesel cars cost more to buy, and even with diesel now the same price as petrol you need to do a lot more miles for it to make sense.

And yes I hate diesel, unless you are doing 15k a year or more, it's pointless and even then I question the sanity of someone who'd want to drive one :p

So the 2.0 TSI is quicker, but the 2.0 TDI feels quicker?

The diesel will achieve 58mpg driving reasonably and the 2.0 tsi i test drove was sub 30s in similar conditions.

The 170 diesel feels fast lower down in the range and over taking. The blast of torque is great. The 2.0tsi is revvy and pulls for longer. Very different applications of power but both fairly similar 0-60 figures.

Your argument for the 2.0TSI is pointless, because we don't want one!
The post was asking for opinions between the 1.4TSI and the 150bhp Diesel, not for opinions between the 2.0 tsi and the 184bhp diesel.

Its being bought via a PCP, and with the discount, and the deposit contribution, along with the lower APR, means a new one is going to cost less to my pocket per month, than the pre reg ones the dealer has, and also than a 1 yr old 2.0 tsi, hence why I asked the question the way I did.

I owned a 2.0 tsi for 2 years, and know exactly what I'd be getting there, and its not what we need for a 2nd car.

Thanks for the input everyone, I think we are pretty much decided on the diesel.

My opinion.
Out of them two get the diesel.
Heard to many stories about the 1.4s going wrong. I would never buy the 1.4.
I travel 5 miles each way to work. 5x a week. At the weekend I may go out on a trip of around 50,60 miles that's
It. No dpf problems for me. As said the 150 will feel very punchy due to loads of torque. My 170 feels fast and now it's remapped it feels really fast.
