RNS510 issue

Post by BishBashBosh »

Any ideas on my misbehaving RNS510?
Seems stuck on a loop of trying to turn on then turning straight off again. Tried the reset (pressed both left and right button with info button) but to no avail.
Unit doesn't work at all so no sounds or sat nav.
Read some posts from a few years ago on updating firmware etc.
is this still the case. Can't even get into it to find out which firmware it has!
2009 1.4 TSi 160.

Try taking the unit out and unplugging it completely? See if it resets itself maybe.

I havent got the correct tools to remove the unit, but ive disconnected the battery and that hasn't helped.
Ive purchased a new firmware disc which is due tomorrow. hopefully that will do the trick!

What firmware have you purchased? I hope it works...

You will have to put it into Boot mode with the <> + Setup buttons and then when it's booting, it should read the disk.

I purchased the above and have tried and tried and tried, but nothing. Just turn on the unit, the VW screen comes on for about 5 seconds, then the whole thing just turns off again. No radio, no sat nav, no nothing.

I did a lot of reading into to this when I first bought my scirocco as i wanted the latest maps and 7 digit postcode in the new firmwares, I would be careful about updating the firmware because different revisions of the rns510 will only accept certain versions you cant put greater than v3810 on my 2008 scirocco RNS510 which has a HW version of 003 and that was even a modified version for the older units as its not officially supported

I'm now waiting for a recovery disc to arrive to see it that works. If that fails, then it's off to Cartronics to whip it out and diagnose the issue. That's £75. I fear the motherboard is knackered which is another £300.
Surely VW should contribute if there's a known problem?

Used this guy in Northampton for exactly the same issue as you. He did it for £90 and now working, this was only a few weeks ago so I don't know longevity, although don't see why it wouldn't be another few years. http://www.rns510repairserviceuk.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's fixed! I sent it to Zoltan in Daventry http://www.rns510repairserviceuk.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; who repaired it for £90 + £10 p&p.
At last I have sounds back in the car. Now to sort out those tinny sounding speakers!
