DSG Gearing

Post by timdaker »

Does anyone know if the top gear ratio of a DSG equipped Tdi 140 is lower than the 6th speed ratio in an equivalent manual?
We have just bought a DSG Scirocco and it feels very 'buzzy' on the motorway after our old manual. I am wondering if it is failing to change into top, it feels exactly like the manual car did in 5th. The fuel consumption is noticeably worse as well. would welcome comments…

never owned a diesel, but with 6 gears i imagine it should just purr along, wjhat mpg do you get doing 70 on the motorway? my 1.4 160 gets 45ish so if its less than that then theres something wrong buddy. but like i said ive got no experience from a diesel...

I'll check next time I'm out but it's fairly easy to check yourself. Find a long straight and accelerate slowly to 60-70 mph and count the gear changes. But from memory if just cruising at 60-70 mph you should be around 2k rpm, . Mpg wise 60+ if just cruising is what I get regularly.

Thanks for these replies, It does seem to change up 5 times, wasn't sure if it should be 6 speed or 7. I'm sure the manual we had was doing more like 80-85 at 2k rpm. The fuel consumption isn't terrible, just 5-6 mpg down on the manual, still averages nearly 50mpg, where the manual was doing 54-56 average. I was wondering if this was down to lower gearing was all. I'm still trying to work out how to drive the DSG, I really don't like automatics but it was better for my wife's commuting. it seems to take all the sportiness out of the car somehow.
Cheers

I've only had mine two weeks, and still getting used to the DSG myself. I'm coming from a Clio RS200 which was doing over 3k rpm at 70 mph so it's relaxing in comparison.

VW would claim the DSG is more efficient than the manual though not by much.

When I had my R32, the DSG version had slightly lower CO2 and consumption figures whereas when I was buying my 170 diesel Scirocco, I was surprised to see that the DSG version had slightly.higher CO2 and consumption figures. Not that it influenced my decision but I put it down to the DSG having different gearing

You don't need to count as when you put it in manual mode the number of gears is displayed on the MFD.

Only the 1.4 Sciroccos are fitted with the 7-speed DSG

Don't need to put it in manual on mine. When it's in auto it says D6 (or S6 in sport) on the MFD when it's in top gear.

So it does, it's a few years since I last drove a DSG
