RCD510 USB audio - chirping

Post by adamgt80 »

Hey everyone.

So I managed to get hold of a new RCD510 unit, thanks to skydemon for that. My old unit had 3 problems, the CD changer didn't work at all, it kept randomly switching between media and radio, and the music on my USB stick kept 'chirping' during songs. Thankfully the new unit has a working cd changer and it hasn't randomly switched between media and radio yet.

However, I still get a chirping noise from my usb music. I've included a video below so you can hear. I've tried a different USB stick but that does the same. I bought a used USB connector so I'm wondering if that is the problem or if it is a known issue with the head units anyway, it can't be can it? I do also have an iPod connector but the only ipod device I have to use it with won't work for some reason, maybe a version issue? So I can't test it.

What I've just found in the last 5 minutes is that the connection to the media in port is flakey. If you knock the plug in the socket then it disconnects. This doesn't necessarily relate directly to the chirping though. Is it a big job to replace the media-in socket to see if that is the issue?

So a bit more investigation... I put the same mp3 onto an SD card and tried to play it. I get the same problem, well it sort of skips a bit instead of the chirping but it's more or less the same.

Is there a particular bit rate or format that these stereos can or can't read? Are there any specs for this around?

I seem to have found the problem, it just means I have some work to fix it. The 510 may support a 320 kbps bit rates but my files are quite large because of this (14mb as an example) and I think it has a hard time loading such large files and playing them smoothly. I tested one file by converting it to 128 kbps (now 6mb) and it plays flawlessly. Now all I need is to find a free batch converter to convert every file on my 64GB usb stick, which will take a while!

I thought I'd report back anyway, it's always good to find a thread like this if you have the same problem.
