Hi all,
I've just passed 300 miles on my 15 plate 2.0Tdi 184 DSG and it seems really thirsty on diesel... It struggles to get anywhere near 40mpg and in towns it is pretty much mid 20s :/
Is this a new car thing that will get better with time? My 2006 mapped 2.0Tdi A3 would touch 65-70mpg on my work journey where my ROC just about does half this!

Economy will improve once the engine loosens off a bit.

I've done around 8000 miles in mine since October and mpg is improving since birth but not as good as I expected. Maybe that's because I drive it like I'm 17 again...
I get around 35-40 on my daily commute which is 11 miles of 50:50 stop/start hell and steady 50mph roads in traffic so hardly long enough to let the engine warm up. However, when I take it on longer trips (I did approx 400 miles in the lakes this past long weekend including 120 motorway at an easy 75) I can just about reach 55 if I drive economically, but usually it's high 40s. When I first got the car I was barely getting 30s on my commute and couldn't quite scrape 40 on longer journeys so I wouldn't worry too much. Still, it's no way near those perfect world figures they preach and honestly I expected it to be a little better.
Edit: there's also the winter diesel reduced performance which I believe we'll only just be getting rid of at the end of March.

Remove the spare wheel jack, tools, rear seats, don't go for the sunroof option as it increases weight, run it on worn out tyres as this reduces weight, duct tape over all body gaps only put 1 gallon of fuel in at a time and drive it in your under pants after a good crap because that's what VW did to get the best MPG out of it!!
39 to the gallon average on all 3 of mine in the last 6 years.

Same with mine, i have a 2.0 TDI 150bhp and at most i'm getting around 48 mpg. I had a 2.2 CTDI Honda Civic before my rocco with 160,000 miles and doing the same journeys i was getting 55mpg. Definitely not as good as i was hoping from VW so far, but again i've only got 3,000 miles on the clock at the moment. Hopefully will improve over time.
