RNS510 - No GPS Signal

Post by TimH »

Hi Guys

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with this problem.
Nav was working fine yesterday, however, I tried to use it today and my current position is not showing correctly so I can no longer use the nav.........
I've checked the GPS viewer which shows the following;
Satellites: 0/9
Mode: No Fix
The headunit was factory fitted along with Bluetooth.
Here's the version information;
Part no 1T0035680D
HW-Version H04
SW-Version 3810
Map Version 7690
Just wondering if there's anything I can check before I go to my local dealers. I presume there's a fault with the GPS receiver, just wondering is this the Shark fin on the roof or is it a unit buried in the dash?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

Had this on mine. I just bought a new gps antenna on eBay and mounted it in a gap above the head unit (fairly easy to pop out) - £10 and half an hour and it was all done. It saved taking off the headlining to get to the original receiver. I even found a video on YouTube of someone doing it on the same unit in a golf

I tried a factory reset as you suggested but alas no success.

I received a GPS antenna which I purchased from eBay and fitted it this evening.
I powered the unit up on my driveway and had 5/12 satellites with 3D fix, hopefully this will increase once I'm out on the open road.

Thanks for the help guys.

I know this is a bit of an old thread but I've got the same problem as above. Can anyone recommend what type of antenna I should buy ? Does the antenna connector change on the year or model of the unit ?
Cheers

Just search on the bay for “gps aerial for vw” and about 10 come up. You need one with a fakra plug. They all seem to be blue fakra plugs, not checked the back of the head ubit but as they’re all blue likely this is right.

Hi @chelspeed, sorry for the late reply, thank you for confirming!!

Just seen them for about £8 delivered - bargain!

Can i just put the actual antenna behind the dashboard somewhere? I'm trying to avoid breaking the seal on the ariel on the outside?

Thanks

Yep tuck it up under the dash as far forward to the bottom of the screen, somewhere in the middle of the car and as high as possible. Not had to do it on a scirocco but on previous cars I have tucked them on top of heating and cooling ducts loosely secured with a tyrap. You are obviously trying to avoid putting it under any metallic objects that would screen out the GPS signals.
