Chipped paint and rust

Post by mrhirst »

Hi everyone

I was getting into my car this morning and spotted some rust! Looks like a stone chip just above the the rear right wheel arch, it seems to have gone down to the metal!!..

I am thinking I'll have to take it to a garage to get it fixed.

I think the car has some corrosion guarantee, do I need to go to an approved garage?
I bought the car from VW used sales and it mentions a 12 month guarantee, could they do something?
If not, any recommendations in the South east London area?

Cheers for any advice!!

Ditto. And get the proper one from VW, gotta match.

I had Chipsaway over today to see if they could do a bunch of such chips and a deeper one or two and it's simply too small for them and more easily done by you yourself as the end result will always be a little bit of a mark. The annoying bit is a couple of them where I thought it was the clearcoat flaked away are where a non-matching paint has been blobbed on making bringing it back to the correct shade harder - do properly, do it once etc

You're always going to get stone chips.
Best just touching up the ones which go back to bare metal to protect the paint from rust, that's the primary point in a touch up, to protect the substrate.
You can get them pretty good if you get a chance to fill them, leave them for a day or two to try and then sand/polish but people don't always have the time.

Thanks for all the responses

I called a VW dealer and they told me my car is listed as 2 different colours on some systems they have so they weren't sure.

Any ideas where I can find the colour code?

There's a build sticker in the boot with your paint code and there should be another copy of it in your service schedule. If you do a search on here there's a thread on decoding the build sticker.

I used this company for dealing with the chips on my car DIY (bought the master scratch kit). perfect match and easy to use following the instructions.
