The scirocco decided to dump all of its coolant today I've had the underside of the car off which was covered in the stuff and have not been able to spot any cracks/damage to any pipes. Had breakdown out and whatnot so its currently sat at the garage but I did notice a screw which was very loose (around 80% out undone) at the front of the engine, about half way down and abit to the left from centre.
I'm assuming it was this bolt that may have released the pressure somewhere but when I filled it backup and ran the engine under load there was no leaks to be found.
Any advise on what this could be would be appreciated!
My 09 2.0tsi dumped its coolant and the actual cause was very hard to find. Tool my mechanic a good few hours stripping things off until he found a small crack in the plastic water pump housing which is hidden deep inside the front of the engine under the inlet manifold. Cant understand why they make a part out of plastic that gets constantly hot and cold as it is a failure waiting to happen.
Anyway had to get a new housing and while stripped out replaced the thermostat etc but some of the parts took a week or so to come as only place that had them was in Germany. Spoke to local dealers who said it was a common problem.
All in all cost me about £350 and no car for a week.

That is exsactly what the garage came back with today, failed water pump and damaged thermostat. I would agree and I am sure i've read somewhere they expect these pumps to be replaced every 4 years or 140000 miles!
The quote is £345 all in which is good, rang up the local VW garage to see what they would offer and after being told it was a "big job" and whatnot gave a price of approx £675!
Had alook at those pics while awaiting breakdown to come out believe it or not! haha.
If they still have the housing when I visit them tomorrow/Wednesday I will try and get some pics
On the cars with cambelts, like the R and the TDIs, they recommend that the water pump is replaced at the same time as the cambelt due to the relatively low incremental cost to change.
As far as I'm aware there is no recommended age / mileage to change a water pump on the chain driven engines.

All fixed :)also turns out that there was a bracket, some bolts and some clips for hoses missing! I found out about the bolts when I looked under the car the other day but did not expect other things to be missing! Thinking I may be giving the garage a used a call...
