Well i had a look and think i have found where its coming from.
It was from just behind the wheel arch on the passengers side.
Just wobbling or tapping the large plastic protector rattled in this area:
So i removed the small plastic cover and on inside there is a plastic ridge that sticks up and was banging on the metal of the car.
I have circled the area where the plastic ridge is on the other side. If you stick your hand there you will easily feel the ridge.
I put a bit of sticky back felt above the plastic ridge and it has stopped the rattle
Really appreciate you taking the time to update and to upload the pictures. If I don't manage to get underneath there myself I'm going to print out the photos and hand them to the technician when I have car serviced!
No Problem moulin12,
Always happy to help.
Before it goes in for a service just put you hand under the car and push on and tap that panel. See if it makes the noise before you inform the mechanic as it could be something else.
Hopefully that's where its coming from, was a 5 mins fix
Got rid of lots of other rattles but still getting the Big Banging one. I'm starting to think that there is a loose cable inside the door that is banding against the panel...
If it was the door i would expect to hear something when closing the door
Or a heat shield in the engine bay rattling but i cant seem to find anything!
To update my end, due to my upcoming small repair to the bodywork (see thread elsewhere), the car's service has been postponed to Aug 12th, at which time will ask the technician to confirm and investigate any rattle.
Oddly enough, I was just thinking yesterday that it would be polite to update.
The facts are that I didn't get too much further forward, and whilst I think the rattle is still there, I'm not sure.
To explain, at the time of the service I raised the issue of the DSG judder. On having replicated the issue during a test drive with the technician, the car was taken in for a 2-day diagnosis and then, after a break of some days, the clutch repair was carried out. Unfortunately, the dsg settings went a little haywire, so it had to go back in again. But to cut this story short, my major focus has been getting the DSG fixed to satisfaction and the repair undertaken under goodwill. Such was the time involved and relief felt in this that I decided not to push the other issues that I had, which were the rattle and occasional squeaking suspension.
I have tried driving with the windows down to see if the rattle might have been anything to do with the clutch/gearbox, but I haven't tested extensively and so the jury is out on this. TBH, I think I've got to the point where I feel I should just try enjoy the car as it is but with possibly upgrading further down the line.
However, extended warranty will be up in about 6 weeks, so I should perhaps revisit the issue. I'll have a try again over the weekend and, if its dry, will try the best I can to get underneath the car. Will update; sorry that I've been a bit tardy on this to date.
not sure if its been mentioned. but I took my headlights out to fit some hids... I founf that BOTH the front horns had fallen off!!!!! they were making a racket. check em!
Haven't read the entire thread so not sure if this was mentioned but I had a similar noise before and it turned out to be the dust guard behind the brake disc was loose... could be worth a quick check

Is there a way of checking if they are loose without removing the headlight?
Just wanting to check.
Thanks
ditto above, currenlty have at least 3 rattles thats really annoying me, since changing to the Rocco R shifter it has a rattle over rough surfaces in that area.. anyone else get this?
I'm keen on this too. Can you see the horns without taking the lights out? Trying to pin down a front end rattle here too, sounds like under trays but they seem well fitted
