Have a bought lemon.
Last week I bought a 2 year old, late 2012 2.0 TDI. 39,000 on the clock nice spec leather,Nav etc in grey.
The test drive and pickup of the car it sounded fine but a couple of days later when I was showing my boss. Started it cold and when it was in idle there was a very slight tapping noise from the engine which went completely when you depressed the clutch. The noise can't really be heard from inside with doors and windows closed. As it's still under warranty and the 4th service was due in 500 miles anyway in booked it into VW for an early service and get them to check it out. Next day it didn't make the rattle/tapping noise. But the next day when I took it into My Local VW it was tapping so they could hear it. They said it's either DMF of gear box fault and they would have to strip it down to Diag. Which they can't do till Monday so I had to get my misses to pick me up from work and I'm on the push bike on Monday. I'm hoping it's all going to be under warranty and they aren't going to blame it on wear n tarred /incorrect use of clutch and I have to fork out.

Sounds like either release bearing or dmf, I have heard this light tapping on a few tdi's and hasn't caused and issues, obviously needs attention if the tapping turns into a knocking sound or loud tapping. But as yours is under warranty I'd just let them sort it for you :-)

I had this a few months back, they replaced the gearbox, clutch & flywheel all under warranty. It could take them a couple of days to get a gearbox in though.

Heard back from vw today. Spring broken on dmf and this has caused scoring on part of gear box casing so it will be a few days before they get the parts. All should be done under warranty but I won't get it back until end of week or beginning of next. Only got the car last week and its spent more time at the garage than on my drive way. Should vw be providing a courtesy car for warranty work.
Did the 8 miles to work today on mountain bike. nearly killed me i,m that unfit, luckly boss let me borrow works car to get home.

Re: Have a bought lemon.
Well VW have had my car all week and I was hoping to get back this afternoon. Unfortunately they have just called me to say that when they got it all back together and tested it the release bearing is now making a horrible noise. They said that unfortunately it may have been damaged when they were putting the dmf/clutch/gearbox back together, so I'll need another one which they cant get till next tuesday/wednesday. So looks like I'm not going to have it for another week. Its luckily the local transport executive have just loaned me the use of an e-bike free for three month as a ride to work initiative. Just hope it stays fine.

Sorry to hear about that mate, I had a bit of bad luck with mine, hopefully your car should be given a clean bill of health soon

Sounds better than the Up! loaned to me whilst my gearbox is being sorted.ricoghardforth wrote: Its luckily the local transport executive have just loaned me the use of an e-bike free for three month as a ride to work initiative. Just hope it stays fine.

Re: Have a bought lemon.
My car was in the garage nearly two weeks and eventually after a couple of attempts and changing part of gearbox housing and i think the thrust bearing the original problem was gone. i.e. tapping noise when iddelling which went when clucth depressed.
Everything was fine for a month but in November it started making a noise changing in and out of first and second gear. Some times a soft thud when releasing the clutch and also a scrapping noise noise when clutch down is down changing in and out of first and second gear when starting and stopping in traffic. This gradually got worse until I took it back to VW on the 1st of December where its been ever since. Its now had dual mass flywheel and quite a few other bits to try and get rid of this noise the last been parts for gear box for first gear. I hate to think how many time its been taken apart and put back together apparently it goes back together quite easily now. Should I be worried about this. I've had the lone of a nice 2014 Golf with Active cruise control, parking assist, auto handbrake which been good, beginning to think 5 doors would have been better all along. Waiting for a phone call today to hopefully tell me its all fixed. I've been led to believe all this is going to be done under warranty.

Just for an update they ended up putting a brand new gear box in and I've now got it back and so far so good.
