Posting whilst waiting for AA to relay me to dealers. The last couple of days a ticking sound developed from the o/s of the engine (timing chain/alternator side). Driving down M3 today and just before services (100m luckily) the coolant light started flashing and power dropped. The temperature didn't rise above 90 but on pulling over there was steam and an empty expansion bottle (which was at normal when I set off this morning).
It's looking like a head gasket job to me but will have to wait to find out. I so wish I had researched this engine before I bought the car 5 weeks ago as I'd never have bought it after reading all the issues.
Just glad it had full VW service history and I paid the £20 to have the extended warranty transferred to me, let's hope VW stand behind it...

Sorry to hear about your woes. Make sure they check the head for warping. Probably not an issue as you seem to have caught it early and not cooked it

Sorry to hear about your problems.
You mention the coolant temp didn't rise above 90, however be aware it's not real time and "corrected" to display 90 over a temp range, circa 75 to 105.

Cheers guys. Interesting info on the temp gauge there. It's at the dealers now, the AA tech thought it might be the water pump and I tempted to agree but we'll see what the garage says. Glad I hadn't sold my previous car yet so at least I have wheels.
I spoke to the sales guy at the dealers about trading it in once they've repaired it. He disappeared for 5 mins and when he returned he said his manager told him 'we have enough p/x cars in at the moment, so we won't take yours in'. Glad I was sat down, I was sure that a 09 with under 50k might be reasonable enough to take in p/x.
I'm still astounded thinking about it now...

Re: 1.4 TSi blown up!
Update: car back from dealer after water pump & belts replaced. Asked them about cam chain tensioner issue on the 1.4, response was 'not heard about any issues'! Also it seems if you are paying for repairs & service out of your own pocket you get the car washed, if it's under VW a Extended warranty, they won't bother. At least it's back on the road but I'm seriously thinking of moving it on & getting the TDi, I need a car I can depend on...
