Error 00665 - Limp mode and Engine light

My first post - and it isn't a happy one!

Had my Scirocco (2.0 TDI) for 8 months now and had my first problem with it.
3 weeks ago I was driving at about 70-80mph a while ago and went into limp mode. I made it home and when I next drove it, it fine but with a feeling of less power.
Anyway, fast forward to today and again on the motorway it went into limp mode at about 60mph and the engine light has now come on. Turning the car off and on clears limp mode, but the light remains on.

I've read plenty of forums with ideas on valves being fault and sensors being damaged/unclean.
Having spoken to the chap at the garage, the last thing he wants to do is change the turbo and I agree with him!

Has anyone experienced anything like this/resolved it?

First thing to do is plug it into vag com and get it to work the variable vanes in the turbo, this can stick and cause this fault code.

Thanks Shak - the car is with a garage at the minute and I will mention this to him.
Currently he is swapping a sensor and has offered to clean the EGR valve and throttle body.

Update on this - £190 later and the fault still exists.
Garage replaced the sensor and cleaned the EGR and throttle body as per my previous post.

Managed to get up to to a decent speed on the way home, still lacked power but neither the coil light or engine management came on.
As advised by the garage, did a long journey the following day and put some Liqui Moly in with the diesel.
Either way on the route, coil light came on and immediately went into limp mode. Turning engine off and on again cleared fault.

Following day I tried to recreate the problem and surely enough at a decent speed, I would say the same speed, the coil light followed by engine management light came on.

I am literally going round in circles with this problem now and I have a concern its going to be an expensive fix.
There are posts saying "it was the throttle pedal, faulty sensor" some saying "clean the veins" others have even replaced the turbo and still had issues.

Saying that I've not yet taken the car to a specialist - but I can't see them guaranteeing a fix immediately.

What are peoples thoughts on cutting out investigating the potential 'little' issues with just replacing the turbo?

Have you found anything more out on this buddy? mine has just done exactly the same as you explain and now feels dead no power until at least 3k then limp mode at 4k with coil light on saying engine fault take to workshop ive found a few things on the turbo actuators prone to be faulty as they are electronic on the CR engines (more on the golfs and jetta) seems an easy fix but like you say it could be £££s wasted and be something totally different? think im going to book mine in with a local VAG specialist but trying to get the best idea I can. Hope you get yours sorted.

i would be going to VW. I see little point going to a normal garage for them to sit there and test things, VW will have probably seen the issue before and will usually know the best course of action. right tools, right parts = less money wasted chasing your tail. The fact you felt the need to tell the garage what you had found out online tells me perhaps you don't have full confidence in the garage - or that they won't know everything. Not trying to be rude (!!!) but send it to a place that deals with vw's and these engines everyday (yes - it prob costs a bit more, but its a false economy looking elsewhere I often think... as your £190 perhaps proves)

My old one did this and it worked out to the the sensor in front of the DPF causing the issue.

Update from me, I took mine into a very respectable Audi/VW specialist in hull called Auto technica who diagnosed it in less than 5 mins. It was the turbo actuator found to be faulty and was sorted the same day :-) £200 but its all done now and feels better than ever to be honest. Doing a little research pays off in my opinion just to give yourself an idea, as it happens I was quite right with my self diagnostic. Also to add from the guys at autotech "it is a common issue with both the 140 and 170 tdi cr engines, the 177 and newer tend to have the revised actuator part" which is what they have replaced mine with. I would never use a main stealer as have never had good customer service from Audi or VW but maybe that is just jct 600 or Hull in general? Local indys tend to treat you with more respect as a customer and I cannot fault the guys at auto technica and I highly recommended them.
