New Owner To Be

Post by patch_78 »

Hi guys,

I hope you are all well?

I am purchasing a Scirocco in the near future, soon as possible, and was hoping for any advice if possible?

I am trading in my Mini Cooper and should have between 11-12k to spend. I would like the 1.4 TSi or the Twin Charger and wonder if there is anything I should avoid or ensure I do before committing to a purchase.

When I bought my Mini I wish I had researched more, but ended up happy with my car luckily.

Many thanks,

I have a 1.4 TSI 160 (2011) from new which had all the software upgrades and revised spark plugs from the factory. No issues at all unlike some 09 and early 10 models with misfire problems and pistons breaking. If you are buying second hand, I would look closely at the service history to make sure that any software upgrades have been implemented (usually requires VW servicing to ensure this has been done) and if it is not clear then require the dealer/seller to check as this was not a recall item but carried out during routine servicing. Go for steering wheel controls as this means that the car has the highline computer installed. Later models some 61 plate and all 12 plate have leather seats. The Scirocco can be a bit hard on front tyres depending on type of roads routinely used so make sure there is plenty of tread on these when buying. Don’t expect the mpg given in VW brochures in normal use. I get 38mpg average from the car computer readout and close to that with the Golf GTi on the same routes.

Really like the car. The adaptive chassis control does give the range of rides in the blurb. Using 3rd/4th as appropriate for overtaking it is quick and takes you well beyond the UK legal limit where permitted. 6th is a very long gear and helps with fuel economy. No experience with the DSG box. Software upgrades have been issued for the box and a recall to change the original spec oil to mineral oil.

Thanks for the reply, I have found a 2010 1.4 TSI 122 with sunroof heated leather seats reversing sensors 42k on the clock for under 12k I quite fancy, but still looking.

I don't do a lot of miles, rarely on motorway. I have a Mini Cooper 2006 at the moment which drinks fuel so this will be better regardless. Will keep looking as I want a white one and the one I found is silver. Looking round the midlands but will travel with the right car. Going to be a cash buy should have my Mini sold so that gives more options.

Appreciate the advice will keep looking for a later model, should I be too worried about high mileage if I find a later model at a good price?

Things I would look for after owning a sciricco for over 3 years. Check for scuffs under bumper lip and plastic under side of doors - gives u a good impression if the person who owned it cared for the car and was aware of what they were doing.... mine were scraped up like crazy and it bugs me.

Look for options, popular ones are RNS upgraded sat nav system, Panoramic sun roof, Leather (i prefer cloth) but leather seems popular.. I would of liked the dynoaudio upgrade in mine as well. Xenons seem rare.

Listen for rattles coming from the boot (easy fix) but get it done before buying, window rattles and cabin rattles that sound like it maybe coming from the passenger glove box. They will drive you mad if you have them.

Careful of the 1.4 Tsi from certain years as they had a major fault in some engines that would make them scrap (you can research that on this forum)

You can put a positive spin on high mileage, at least its reliable!

Thanks for the advice, I will take note when viewing cars. I'm just waiting on my insurance to call me back for quotes on the engine sizes.

Once I have an idea of that I will continue the hunt! Like the spin on high mileage, so long as the car isn't really worn inside I will consider all!

Excited now am hoping to find one before the end of the month as my car will need it's tax renewing by then.

Hi and welcome. Personally I would avoid the 1.4 models and go for the 2.0 tsi or tdi. Heard to many problems with the 1.4 to make me ever consider buying one.

Good tip thanks, am I right in thinking the TDi Bluemotion has the really cheap tax? I'm leaning towards the diesel now.

Someone mentioned to avoid 2009 or below, any reason for this?

The engines were tuned to have more power after 2009 I think..... not that you would notice.. the only other change im aware of its the steering wheel is different.

Re to the mileage, personally even though i made that comment "at least its reliable" id still advice getting one no more than 50-60k miles.

I am also looking for a 160ps 1.4tsi, i won't be able to get insured on a 2.0 yet as i'm 17, might just be able to get insured on a 1.4 but for a first car i think it is nippy enough. looking for one in blue with leather seats, xenons and sat nav.

Think xenons on a 1.4 would be seriously rare. However, there are a number of useful/interesting threads on here on the various bulbs and led sidelights that might suffice until you get the 2.0!

i could probably get them changed myself into xenons, i want the full scirocco r kit, i costs around £3,500 from niche conversions and that is pricey.. maybe just get xenons and get the R front bumper with LED lights, and maybe the R spoiler, that'll look sporty enough.
