Painting my mirrors black
Hey all
I have just brought some grey plastic primer, glass black paint and clear coat. Is there anything else I need?
Do I need to go over the plastic with sandpaper first?
Any help would b great.
Thanks

Re: Painting my mirrors black
If your mirrors are in good condition you could just scotch them up with grey scotch. I gave mine a DA with a 500 disc as I had a few chips to do anyway.
If you are rubbing it down by hand then don't use too harsh paper as you don't won't scratches left in it.
If a quick key up with scotch is all you need then clean them up & give them a few light coats of primer, flat that with a 1000 disc or 800 wet & dry paper, re-clean then start the colour
I didn't even prime mine & I went from white to Audi phantom black metallic

Looks awesome! Can I just ask, what does grey scotch mean? Sorry I'm very new to this.Shaun1982 wrote:If your mirrors are in good condition you could just scotch them up with grey scotch. I gave mine a DA with a 500 disc as I had a few chips to do anyway.

I'm also really struggling to get the mirror covers off. Any advice?

Re: Painting my mirrors black
I fou d the covers very easy. I stood facing them looking towards the back of the car, got hold of each ones on the inside edge as it wraps round near the base plate & pulled them off. Literally a few seconds job [SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH]
Grey scotch is pretty much like the scourer type bit on a sponge you wash dishes with, they do it in purple too which is a harsher grade

Re: Painting my mirrors black
Use a plastic trim removal tool and prise between the indicator and the mirror cap at the outer edge and it will come away very easily.NickOSullivan wrote:I'm also really struggling to get the mirror covers off. Any advice?

Re: Painting my mirrors black
Sounds like either way is easy enough. If you don't have a tool then try it my way. It's harder refitting in my opinion lol

What does a body shop charge to paint things like this nowadays?

Re: Painting my mirrors black
You will get a good finish but it's never the same as the finish from a gun. Very annoying really lol

Re: Painting my mirrors black
Out of interest what would people want to pay if I did them at work for you? Could either be an exchange service or just send them & ill do them & send back?

Re: Painting my mirrors black
You can get a good finish if you use rubbing compound to smooth the finish and apply some quality wax.
