iPhone connection

Post by DMAW »

Hello,

Recently purchased a 2009 1.4 tsi 160. Love the car but the only problem is I can't seem to get the system to recognise my phone. It's an iPhone 5S and I've been plugging the apple usb cable into the multimedia usb cable that is situated in the arm rest. A message comes up saying 'media device not recognised'. Any suggestions? Would getting a USB charger for the 12v and an aux cable work? My phone is connecting through the Bluetooth fine and I can make calls but the music option doesn't work either.

Guidance or help would be really appreciated.

Thanks
Rob

I have tried the search function. There is varying posts that don't actually lay out in simple terms how to solve the problem. And none actually answer my questions directly. The responses are mainly people putting their '2p' in...

So if someone does know the answer to my questions I would be massively appreciative if you could help me out.

Thanks in advance.

I have had this issue also and still yet to find a definitive answer.

I believe the issue is around the firmware of the MDI. You can update the MDI using the following link - http://www.my-gti.com/3148/volkswagen-m ... e-upgrades" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Due to the age of your car you will not be able to apply the 2012 update.

I have upgraded my MDI but still no joy. Interestingly enough I borrowed an iPhone 5 and that worked fine, only a problem with my iPhone 5s. So I was tempted to downgrade to the iPhone 5.

I did contact my local VW dealer and they were going to charge £120 to look at it and update MDI with no guarantee of a fix, I thought this was pointless as you can update MDI yourself. The VW technician did say VW have had a lot of queries regarding this and are looking at supplying a further update to fix. I am just hoping the new update appears on the link above and it will resolve my issues.

Also appreciate if anyone else can shed any more light on the issue.

There should be two VW multimedia cables USB and Apple 30pin cable. You need to use the apple one!
Not sure if they do a lightning connector but you should just be able to use an adapter.
If you got this from a VW dealer they should provide you with it. If you got the car privately talk to the VW dealer to buy one.

I received the MDI to apple 30-pin cable with the car. Then purchased the apple 30-pin to lightning adapter from apple and had the issue with iPhone 5s.

Next I purchased the MDI to lightning cable from TPS and still had the same issue with the iPhone 5s. Then tested same cable with iPhone 5 and works fine.

I have trawled through multiple fourms and google searches and still no joy.

Still no definitive answer on that post :shrug:

As per that post I have tried both official VW cables with an official apple connector and it still does not work

The replies from me and rob were aimed at solving DMAW issue.

Not sure about your issue martynk87 sorry. Maybe an issue with your phone in specific.
Running latest ios? Tried using other interface docks to check its not the lightning plug on your phone?
Got someone else iphone 5s with same ios version to try?

You wont get the car to recognise your iphone if you use the USB connector. You need to use the apple - MDI connector, and then buy and apple 30 pin - lightning connector.

Might also help to upgrade the firmware. I see all these issues have been mentioned anyway

Ah yea sorry I now realise DMAW was using the USB cable.

Yes I have the latest ios7 firmware, I have also tried 1 other iPhone 5s and same issue but unsure on their ios version.

I have also upgraded my RNS510 firmware, MDI firmware and returned the VW lightning cable to TPS as faulty and received a new one to test.

It is such a frustrating issue for me as the phone will play music for a few minutes, then it will disconnect and display device not connected. Then I have to go unplug and reconnect for it to only last a few more minutes. I cannot think of any more testing to carry out.

I have reverted to leaving my old iPhone 4s in the MDI slot permanently. But then that is also annoying as I have to remember to take it out of the car and update music.

Thanks everyone.

I have resulted in using a usb charger in the 12V and an aux cable. Plays music perfectly, even through spotify, and it charges too.

nazpatel, the update you need is http://www.my-gti.com/3482/volkswagen-m ... -kw22-2011" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

make sure you have the MDI to USB cable for your car

download the file from that link, then make sure you put the file in the root of the USB memory stick

now plug the USB stick in to the MDI cable, then plug the MDI cable in to your car

finally turn on your ignition and press MEDIA button on head unit, you should see the update taking place on screen

here is also a video of the update - " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is what I did, had to update from earliest update to most recent in order but my iPhone 5c works perfectly. I had to buy MDI - lightning cable though
