Low level Screenwash?
Hi-hope this is posted in the right place....?
I bought a 170 TDI Gt in May this year (61 plate) so it's 2nd hans to me but still under VW warranty- but I noticed that when the screenwash level get low there isn't a warning light to say its low the screenwash just stops.....
Booked the car into the local dealer only to be told that my particular car doesn't have the low level warning? Really? didn't think the GT was a particulaly low level spec and would have expected it to have a low screenwash warning...
Or is that all BS/ dealer trying to fob me off.
Hope someone can shed some light.

Re: Low level Screenwash?
That's correct, unless your car has the optional Winter Pack, you don't get a " low washer fluid" warning.
Hard to believe but that's the way VW does it. It was the exact same with my R32, it was part of the Winter Pack amd not standard equipment.

Re: Low level Screenwash?
It's surprising that this isn't standard but the winter pack is a bloody expensive option ! . If you've already got leather and xenon's ( you'll automatically have heated seats and headlamp washers) , you still had to pay an extra £240 just to get heated washer jets and a low screen-wash warning !
Having said that , I'll bet that its retrofit able !
A quick check on EKTA reveals that there is only one part number for the washer bottle - So - you'll either have a water level switch (7M0919376) and o ring (7M0919382) with the Winter Pack or a blanking bung (8E0955465A) for cars without that option . The only thing you'll need then is the harness plug . It's highly unlikely that there are two wiring harness's ( with or without fluid level) - extra part numbers cost money, and manufacturers like to keep things simple.
This picture shows the level sender (7) and harness plug (6) , next to the rear windscreen washer pump (4)
If you have the harness plug hanging there (maybe taped up in the harness) , then you're laughing. I remember seeing the level sender option somewhere in VCDS ,So it could just be a case of enabling the option and retro fitting the water level switch (£8 on ebay !) and a new o ring !

Yea, I would guess the plug will be in the wiring loom somewhere as it won't b cost effective to have different looms.
If the plug is there then it will just be a case of installing the sender unit and configure in vcds.

Re: Low level Screenwash?
Thanks for the reply’s folks.
Just never sure is the dealers are taking the pee or not.
Still can't quite believe to get low level warning you need the winter pack! Oh well if that’s how it is so be it.
Interesting about maybe retro fitting. Might have a peek at the weekend to see of the cable/ plug is lying/ tied up on the loom.
Got a VCDS/ VAGCOM cable & software so if it is just a case of buying a sensor, plugging in and switching on function in VAGCOM might just do that.

I already have the winter pack on my car , but if it didn't - I'd be all over it like a rash !dimexi wrote: I bet this will be on your car in no time Lee . Retrofit king
I find the level sensor really useful , and if that connector plug on the harness is there (on 'non-winterpack' cars) , then you could potentially get this sorted for less than a tenner !

Re: Low level Screenwash?
Just to say IIRC the winter pack cars have a larger washer bottle so may not be quite as easy as hoped
Rising Blue,DSG,Vienna Leather,Winter Pack,Pano roof,Folding mirrors,Dynaudio/DAB,Park Sensors,Cruise, Flat tyre indicator,Prem Mats+Sills,Metal Pedals,Gt Badge,Fiscon,Covered cup holder/rear cup holders.Now gone Piano Black with new Climate Control

Re: Low level Screenwash?
I think this is because of the headlamp washers? Going to check my car to see if it is possible as a useful addition. Wiring looms do differ though so hunt the plug is on!martdy wrote:Just to say IIRC the winter pack cars have a larger washer bottle so may not be quite as easy as hoped

Re: Low level Screenwash?
Cars with headlight washers have a 5.5litre water bottle. Headlight washers ate included if you spec Xenons or the winter pack.martdy wrote:Just to say IIRC the winter pack cars have a larger washer bottle so may not be quite as easy as hoped

Re: Low level Screenwash?
I'm just going off what EKTA says ( The VW Parts system)
I logged in , and entered the details for a 2010 rocco ( the 13MY data is exactly the same - indicating no change)
only 1 part number for the bottle itself
you can have either a headlamp washer motor 12 or a blanking bung 14
you can have either a water level sensor switch 5 or a blanking bung (5)
you can have either a normal washer jet 23 or a heated one (23) *part numbers not visible on the graphic below
I reckon its a safe bet , that on your non-winterpack / non xenon car , you could fit the level sensor in lieu of the blanking bung
I'm not so sure about the harness plug though - if the plug is there , then VW are a bit naughty to charge £240 ! - Ok , i know this includes heated jets - but even so.....

Re: Low level Screenwash?
Thanks UKLEE. Useful post. When I fitted front fogs there was no wiring/plug in the harness so probably not for the water level sensor.

Re: Low level Screenwash?
Does anyone have an electric scheme of the low level screenwash sensor G33?
I fitted the sensor yesterday, very easy there is just a blind stop with a rubber seal already installed.
Only had to pull out the stop and put in the sensor and wireing.
Now i want to connect it to the instrument cluster.
I have done some searching and found that it has to be connected to pin 17 of the instrument cluster on golf 6.
Im not 100% sure its the same pin on a Scirocco.
Hopefully someone can confirm this.

Re: Low level Screenwash?
I can't post the circuit diagram atm, but it does show the washer level sender connecting on pin 17. It also shows the sender sharing a ground point with the wire from pin 20 on the dash connector.

I wonder if it also works when the ground wire is connected at another ground point.

Re: Low level Screenwash?
Thank you very much for uploading the circuit diagram for me, very kind!
I just connected everything and it's working I had to spray a lot of the washer fluid away to see the light coming on but who cares lol.
I first topped up the washer fluid and checked byte 1 bit 2 in module 17 - instruments: washer fluid warning active/installed. Then the light will come on when the sensor is not connected.
After that i connected 1 wire of the sensor to ground with a connector behind the upper screw that holds the fusebox to the frame of the dashboard, so i can tell a connection to ground point 410 isn't a must..
What you also can do is find a ground point near the washer botle, i saw someone who connected the ground to one of the bolts that hold the washer bottle. It will safe you some wiring but it's a little harder to reach.
After that i connected the other wire of the sensor to pin 17 of the instrument cluster. When i turned my ignition on the washer fluid warning was gone so i knew it was working.
I also twisted the wiring to see if the level sensor has a particular way of connecting but it doesn't matter how you connect it. It will work in both ways.
Still have to tape the wiring to the harness so that it all looks nice and tidy, i will make some pictures when finished.
What i forgot to mention is that you can install the fluid sensor by pulling out the sidelight cover and take out the fog light. You don't have to detach the bumper.

Re: Low level Screenwash?
I was going to say (yesterday) that the ground point shouldn't matter but I forgot. In my understanding, ground is ground, no matter the location (correct me if I am wrong).
I really look forward to seeing your installation guide, and might attempt if it's not too difficult.

Hi Mate, looking at doing this myself, where is the wire that leads to the cluster? is it already in the loom?
