So 10 mins or rubbing got it like this. Not sure what VW garage were doing...

Waiting on some fine grade wire wool to get the stuck bits off the end!

Quick heads up in relation to this subject - follow Richard Tipper on twitter & he recommends tesco value soap pads (Brillo style) and autosol followed by sponge applicator and autosol. Now I can hear some of you good folk sucking your teeth at the thought of Brillo pads but if you check out RT (@perfectionvalet) you might be surprised at some of the exotica he works on, on a daily basis. I shall be trying this at the weekend !

I only recently found out (bought car in jan!) that my exhaust is supposed to be chrome, not steel black! I found some Maguires metal polish in the garage. Literally ten minutes later they look brand new! Did it with a torn towel lol will need a wire brush for the edging though. I got after pics, will post tomorrow. I don't have before pics, but, I noticed a scirocco at work has the same dirty exhaust problem I had, so I'll snap a pic of that when no ones looking lol

@selleym - mine used to look like the inside of your exhaust! 10 mins with Maquires, and this is the result. Did you decide which brush to use to get it looking better? i need to fine tune mine too!

I use cutting compound if I run out of autosol with wire wool. Brings up mint. I wouldn't use it if exhaust was chrome finish tho.

Just seen your post Selleym - apologies for delay
I believe they're the standards - the rear box is stamped VW so I guess so :)
