It seems like whoever had the car before me decided that cleaning the exhaust tips was a waste of time so now they look like this:

Use soap pads and autosol to get the worst off then buff with autosol and a rag - get the cheap multi packs from Range or ASDA as you'll throw one away each clean
I did this last weekend - the technique is recommended by Richard Tipper (@perfectionvalet) & by eck it works - he does it on all manner of auto erotica

my chrome tips didnt look as bad as that but a few hours of polishing made them look way better. i myself used two kinds of polish a rather rough one and a finer one to finish it off with, never will look like new cause of the corrision inside the material, but sure looks good and the chrome blings more then it did.

What do you both think of the chrome tips you can get? Im not sold on them because they remind me of a darker time when I had a 106 with the chrome tip on haha!

They aren't the chrome tips though are they ? so they will never be gleaming.
Was always of the impression that wirewool isnt good to use on the chrome ones (not that his is chrome, I am talking generally)... No risk of scratching?!? I have the metal polish but I have been quite nervous to buy wirewool and use on it

Fine grade wire wool like 000 or 0000 should be fine. Used in conjunction with metal polish should bring chrome tips up a treat. It's what everyone on detailing world uses and even the professionals so can't be bad. Mine never get that bad so iv never needed wire wool. I can see where your coming from. I can't see it leaving scratch
Mine were really bad, had no visible chrome at all; solid black soot. Used a combination of sink cleaner with a cheapo low grade fine foil pad. solvents did nothing, the pad was scratchless and took 2 min. Don't be scared, they work. oven cleaner also works a treat.
