Any ideas on a loud knocking noise from passenger rear side?

Post by Data Ghost »

Driving along as normal when the car started making a harsh metal on metal knocking noise when hitting the smallest of dips and bumps in the road. The noise seems to be coming from the rear passenger side area as far as I can tell.

Took it to my local garage who put it on the ramp. Everything seems tight and secure underneath so we took it out for a drive so the mechanic could hear it for himself. They are a little baffled at the moment as the sound is pretty harsh so you would expect to see something hanging off.

It flew through its MOT last week and this seems to have come out of nowhere. havent hit any nasty potholes, or any other kind of damage recently.

Wondering if it could be a snapped shock mount but Im unsure how to access it? Anyone have any ideas what might be going on?

Oh and the car itself is driving perfectly, no warning lights, handling etc all feels perfectly fine. However the sound is quite rough and Im not happy driving it. It must also sound quite loud from the outside too as far as I can tell.

Hello,

It is not a creaking noise is it?

I had a creaking noise from my car last year, I thought it was suspension but once the technician from the dealer came out with me, they identified it as a faulty spot weld.

On completely smooth surfaces like motorways, I did not notice it, but town driving it was there nearly all the time. I have posted a link below which may help.

Well Ive just had a call from the garage, apparently its a snapped coil spring. We couldnt initially see this when it was on the ramp as the bit that the spring sits in (technical term) is hard to see into.

Thinking about it, I stuck my fingers in there the day before and thought i felt something move momentarily but then couldnt find it again and I had absolutely no room to move my hand or fingers to investigate further (and was also slightly worried Id get my hand trapped).

I have been quoted £80 for a genuine dealer part and with labour it comes to £117.

I would imagine a snapped coil spring made far more noise than my spot weld. Glad they have identified it. Cost of £117 does not seem to bad at all. I had to pay £200 for the spot weld but they did have to remove some of the interior to get to it, so fairly labour intensive.

Sadly, broken springs is an all to common problem on VW cars and has been for over the last 10 years. Not so bad when it's a rear as it's easy to change. Pain when it's a front.

Strange thing is, I had a snapped coil spring on my Audi TT and I didn't even know it was snapped. Never made any noise, so Im not sure why the Scirocco is different.
