NEED HELP! 1.4 122 or 160?!?!

Post by tainstar »

Hello people. New to the forum. Happy i found it!

Just finished saving up for a scirocco. Excited but a little cautious and slightly nervous as i dont want to make a huge mistake when spending a lot of money.

I will be buying a used approved vehicle from main dealer (bad experiences from private purchases)

I am definately going with a 1.4.

I just dont kbow whether to go for the 'slower' 122. Or the 'unreliable' 160.

Please may some of you who own either of these cars give me some reccomendations, some positives and negatives.

I am drawn to the 160bhp, obviously because it is faster. I am slightly however put off with the talk about engine faults and engines blowing up and all sorts of problems to do with the engine i have been reading

I know this may sound ridiculous but i am drawn to the 160 through it having ACC where you can select nornal sport and comfort.

I do not however want to invest my hard earned cash into something i love to be heartbroken wben it goes wrong
Can anyone offer any knowledge or reassurance?

Is the 122 really a bad alternative? Is there a huge difference?

All comments are welcome and would really appreciate some help advice and knowledge

Very excited to be part of rhe rocco team!!

Hi there after enjoying our 122 for the past 2 years 9 months and now having to look for a new lease, I would have gone for the 160 without a second thought had the facelift come in sooner, and not in the middle of our lease change. As with the 122 you have already worked out, it lacks the power of the 160, and the acc should have been standard across the range, just get the vw extended guarantee, and enjoy

Im also new here and since a few weeks ago when a Scirocco was parked outside my appartment.. im totally in love with this car and im buying one.

Im also a bit concerned about the 1.4 160 but I was under the impression that its the 08/09 models that has problems and if you go for a 2010-model you are safer...
Isnt that right?

Thanks buster, thats exactly the feeling i dont want to experience, buying 122 and then regretting not buying the 160.

I also agree the ACC should of been a standadd feature across all models and specs of the scirocco.

Nizzon - good to know i am not the only one worried about this! I have also read the majority of problems are on the 2009 models, i hope some amendments have been made by volkswagen for the models after this year.

I can not afford a brand new one and so will be buying 2010/2011.

I do really want the 160 just need confidence its not gonna do the dirty on me lol

Just my 2p
But I'd save more money and get either a 140TDI or the 2.0l petrol
Prices will drop soon as with the face lift

I would also agree with jays advice. I personally wouldnt touch either of the 1.4s. Heard to much about them going wrong.

TDI barely excist overe here (Sweden) and the 2.0 is currently out of my price range.
Will prices fall as soon as the 2014 is released or how does this usually work? If so.. when is the 2014 shipping?
Dont think I can wait to save up over the summer... :hyper:

As above. Amendments were made in week 22 of 2010 IIRC. So anything 11 plate should be fine. That's the one I'm going for now. 170TDi are too hard to find, and IMO the 160 tsi is better value on the used market.

Not slating the engine just personal preference!

Thanks nizzon for the link to the article!

And waspy thats very useful i will definately be looking at 60plate onwards, i think you have given me the exact confidence and peace of mind i needed. Can i ask where you information of these amendmenta?

Regards UK, last I read was available to order from May but shipping expected to be Sept 14.

Regards reliability of the 160s, I haven't read of any issues with the engine outside of those occurring across the range, other than some reports on the earliest 160 models, as per above. I have a 11 plate with 24K on the clock, with zero engine issues in its service history and in my 6 mths of ownership.

I not sure that the facelift would radically alter depreciation of cars much older than 2 years, since it is in this price range where decisions over old vs new are made - though there may be some reduction in prices due to an increase in 2- and 3-year old cars to the market as a consequence of new Roc purchases having been delayed.

SO informative.

Be careful with 60 plates. There can be a long lead time between build and registration. 11 plates onwards should have no risk (in relation to the amendment date)

I too started very worried by the 160 issues, so much that I started looking at the 170TDi, but the thread linked convinced me if I could get an 11 plate I would be fine.

These are simply UK car registration numbers / plates. In this case, they refer to a car registered for on-road use in the 6 months beginning September 2010 (60 plate) and in the 6 months beginning March 2011 (11 plate). Ordinarily (but not always), build date would precede the registration date by several weeks only. All that would appear to matter in the context of the discussed issue/concern is that the model year/week build for the intended purchase is as mentioned in the above referred thread.

I have loved my 122 1.4, but wanted more so am going straight to an R in next few days.

The car will go well, if you aren't afraid to take it to 4000rpm, you will out pace people that drive 'normally'

However it will require you to think about throttle management at low revs, it isn't particularly torquey and there is a bit of turbo lag.

Its been great though generally, cheap to insure/tax and great MPG.

I would get the 160 if you can

Thanks waspy. Think il wait a tiny bit longer and ensure I get an 11 plate. I think I am now confident I can buy a 160hp with peace of mind. I didn't think of production time and stuff thanks for giving me a different look at it. It will be worth waiting a little while longer and spending a little bit more

Moulin12 that's very reassuring as I have not read many reviews from owners of 160hp 1.4s saying its problem free. All this positive feedback has been great help.

Can not wait to own one. It's a big jump for me from my old mk5 golf 1.4 (80hp). Slow as hell!

Will definitely upload some pictures and stuff as soon as I get it!!!

You have all been great help!

Am I right in saying that the the 1.4 160 is not going to be available withe the new facelift model and the only TSI 1.4 version will go from the present 122 BHP to 125BHP. If you want more power then you will have to go for one of the 2.L versions.

From current press releases, yes, this is correct.
