2.0 TDI 140 & 2.0 TDI 170 Diference

Post by pkneca »

Hello,

I am curently searching to buy a Scirocco for me. It will be a 2.0 TDI model. What is the diference between 140 and 170hp engine? Maybe bigger turbo or something like that? :)

Yes the 170 has a bigger turbo than the 140 version.

20kg extra weight, chrome tail pipes, bigger turbo and a "soundaktor" device that makes the 170 sound amazing while you're driving it (but sounds exactly the same to everyone else).

Main differences driving it is a tiny fuel penalty taking the 170 over the 140 but far better performance. in the 140 acceleration is relatively poor in 5th and 6th, on the 170 pull is great in every gear - you won't feel the need to change down to 4th as often doing an overtake over 50mph.

Thanks guys :D

I am curious, is it posiible to make 170hp version out of a 140hp? Bigger turbo and everything else that is different, and then a chip tuning.

I want that in my car:

If you remap the 140 you can get close to 180bhp. But if you get a 170 and remap it, you can easily top 200bhp.

Yeah, but I am curious if is it possible to turn 140hp model into a 170hp and after that put better mapping, so car would have 200hp+. I hope you understand me. :)

I'm puzzled why you would want to buy a 140 and turn it into a 170 then tune it to get 200.. When you could just get a 170 to begin with and remap that and get around 200+bhp. Less work involved for same thing.

Buying a 140 to turn it into a 170 makes nosense at all. From a resale point of view it will always be viewed as a 140 when you sell up/trade it in. That bigger turbo may not be the only difference - perhaps the injectors are a different size/class etc. Last time I looked, a 170GT was only about £760 more than a 140GT. You will spend more than that just replacing the turbo on a 140.

If you want a 200+bhp TDI, by far the most economical and hassle-free way of doing it is to buy a 170 in the first place.

If I may say something. Dont even think about 140, I have 170 remaped by Bosch on 210hp and 440nm. And I can tell you the Golf 6 GTI is a slow car against me

The 170 has different cams than the 140.

I too can vouch for the potency of a remapped 170. Revo did mine and the only downside is increased front tyre wear.

Any gear, any revs (above about 1500) it feels really grunty. That’s the best thing, the performance is so accessible. I came from a BMW 330Ci and my Roc is so much faster than that in everyday driving.

I must say that the sound inside of my 170bhp Roc when I drive it hard is probably one of the things I like most about the car. I've lost count of the amount of people that have gone for a spin with me and can't believe its a diesel!!

Obviously a lot more power as well...

First thing I did was remove the Soundaktor - made the cabin a much nicer place to sit hour on hour.

Horses for courses, but relaity is its a 4 pot oil burner - it aint ever going to sound great!

Hi everyone, good to join this group.
This topic has been really helpful as I am in the same situation and deciding on buying a 140 or 170 - thanks.
It seems almost unanimous in favour of the 170, which was my first preference and still is.
But just as a side note, I recently enquired about a 140 that has been 'supposedly' remapped as per the attached, and wondered what you guys thought.
- the original 140 mpg figures seem really low, although I know the manufacturers figures are always too high anyway!
- they claim to get the same power 177, and even greater torque 291 than the brand new model - but still with the smaller 140 turbo, standard cams etc..
I wondered if this is even possible!
On paper, this would have more pull and I guess better 0-60 than a standard 170 or a new 177 model.
thanks in advance

No complaints about my 170 TDi and this one is straight of the box still. If you are going to tune it then I'd look for 200 out of 170, not 170 out of 140 - there's got to be some issues about strength and reliability of components which are designed to handle 140 and then get 170 put through them

But you could say the same about putting 200 through 170-spec components.

Simple answer - get the 170 !
