How fast is an R?

Post by stephen_belfast »

Hi Guys,

I've been delving in and around this forum for a long time and recently my activity has definately increased more than that I would wish. My 6+ month wait is almost over and my car is probably sitting dockside as I type (build week 50 R DSG).

Now my focus has changed to the car...how it feels to drive, how safe will I be at night with my R in my driveway and will I be at risk of a car-jacking ....the list goes on and on.

Also, how fast will it feel? Is it so fast that you have to be very, very careful? Are there a lot of tail-gaters and people in crap cars wanting to race?

PS the fastest car that I have driven has been a 1.4 golf S from Eurocar....only joking, a 280 SLk 240bhp.

Could some kind person enligten me and give me some advice that may make ownership of this mighty pretty car more enjoyable.

Thanks in advance for any kind persons opinions.

Keep er lit

Stephen

It picks up speed faster than you think thanks to the torque (helped by a nice turbo setup)

It will get to 3 figures quite easy and licence losing territory.

Otherwise it's just a VW Golf with a Fat Arse really so some may not take much notice of it. :)

Just enjoy the car mate.

(to keep Trix happy :D)

(or maybe not  )

Have you not test drove one before buying ?, you won't be dissapointed with the power, if you are then a quick remap will solve that lol

0-60 in a DSG is about 5.2 sec 1/4 mile in 13.69. Its fast !
My MKV R32 attracted much more attention from undesirables. I raced a Manual MK V R32 and MKIV R32 @ inters this year and it left them for dust. Good thing about the Rocco R is that most people dont really know what it is had one bloke asking me if it was a diesel :P

The fastest thing I ever drove was my 140 TDI before I traded up to the R! It felt as if I was in a rocket ship. As for pricks tailgating, I find it happens a lot more than it used to in my diesel, every car seems to get more competitive when they see my car, I dont race (normally :p) but when I do I put most in the shade. (Aston Martin was a step too far I think hehe).

As for carjacking, I leave my car on my drive and when I stay in town on business it seems ok parking on the side roads, I dont mind walking an extra 5 mins to get to the car as long as its safe.

I think the official figure for the DSG is 5.8 Secs to 60 and 6.0 for Manual.

I think those are the official 0-62 times... so 0-60 for DSG 5.6 and the manual 5.8...

You won't be disappointed! Its quick!

Test drove a 2014 Cayman 2.7 two days ago and my R felt quicker than the porsche but I think this was just due to the different power delivery as the speedo was still climbing just as rapid as the R

I love my R. Had it about four months now. Coming from a corsa 1.2 80bhp to a 265bhp is a massive difference.

Only problem im finding at the moment are that parts are expensive for the VW.

The power delivery in the R is unreal. Just munch up the roads and cars too lol. Also i love how subtle the R looks as its very understated. A zetec S tried driving hp my ass. Foot down and cudnt even see his lights

It can take you by surprize when you try the different modes. Kick-down in Auto is different to Paddle Down 2 and flooring (if not floor it begs for it). It does auto shifting in Paddle Mode too if left late but stays in Paddle mode too. Paddle is more responsive and much like Sport Mode except Sport opens up the rev limit to around 8000 rpm.
Then add to all that the 3 suspension modes when again alter the auto gear change limit and stiffen the steering.
It makes it feel like the best of both eco and sport all in one car plus anything in between ("refined fury").
Best to run Comfort mode only in towns, Normal for rural, Sport for windy back roads as it can sink into bends well at speed plus the XDS (breaking in bends) pulls the car more around corners than you'd believe! So it's hard to go sideways unless you apply other advanced techniques plus it does not roll like a Golf :p
The only thief was one I caught in the act when he tried my door and I chased him. I now use CCTV but he was trying any car in the area. My car does get looks (way up North like) and many blokes have complemented on it. It's had racers but non that contended lol!
Be sure to follow the Service program and do not pressure wash. Just wax car wash or hand wash. That pressure wash will only take off your wax and get dirt faster again.

If pressure washing is removing your wax, you are either holding the jet far too close to the paintwork, or using a very poor quality wax.

That said; It's always good practice to reapply wax after a wash....or, at the very least, top up the existing LSP with a good quick detailer that offers good hydrophobic protection, such as Sonax BSD.

Hello mate

I started with a new 1.4TFSI audi a3 in 2012, which was fairly nippy for what it was, then i moved onto the R after that. I think its a great car, and the performance figures don't do it justice. i also noticed with mine how tuneable the car was, i ended up with stage 2+ but even with a simple stage 1 remap it changes the car completely.
My new car, a c63AMG , which is pushing more than 500 horses still doesn't feel much quicker than my rocco did, so you've made a good choice and definitely won't be disappointed with it!
