i have owned my rocco tdi for just over a year now.
recently the yellow exhaust warning light started to illuminate, then would occasionally go out.
then when overtaking i lost power, the glow plug light started flashing and the warning advising to take to dealer.
i spoke to a trusted vw/audi trained mechanic, who checked the car over and cleared the faults,
he was unsure if it was just an electric build up or not.
after a month the same happened again.
the mechanic traced the exhaust fault light to the egr valve,he stripped and cleaned it as it was covered in soot.
he is of the opinion it could be from the short journeys the car is used for.
ultimately it may mean a new valve,we wil wait and see.
the loss of power he traced to the turbo, the accuator to be accurate.
this seems to be a common fault which at one time required the turbo to be removed and replaced as a whole.
now as it is a bit of a common problem they have a repair 'kit'
this is the accuator.the first unit supplied by vw turned out to be faulty(thank goodness for the keen mechanic)
replacement took 2 days to arrive, now fitted and turbo set up.
blimey what a difference.over time the turbo had gradually decreased power, meaning we had failed to notice the loss of efficiency and power.
i thought i would post just incase anyone else comes across the same with there rocco, and hopefully gain some feedback upon the egr flow valve.

Re: turbo fault(acctuator) and egr problem
still lacking power,
ie in 2nd,the turbo does not 'come in'
back to garage, they did full tests, think the egr valve faulty, seems to be a common fault?
weve blanked it for now, going to run it to see how performs,
told eventually it will go into 'limp mode'
pricing up egr valves, offered a couple of 2nd hand ones but going to get a new one,
stupid difference in prices.
any one had same problem
have heard it happen to an owner with a passat and also a tiguin

Re: turbo fault(acctuator) and egr problem
I've just got shut of my Audi 2.0tdi Quattro 170bhp as I've had two years of problems with EGR valves, injectors even with fault codes changed, eventually it does get a lot worse and I do 40k miles plus a year - in the end had a full remap and the DPF removed which was the only way to get round the issue. That's why I'm now back in a petrol!

Check the DPF (Diesel particulate filter) they tend to clog if journeys are too short for them to build up enough heat to burn off. take it for a long motorway drive and see if it clears.

Re: turbo fault(acctuator) and egr problem
How did the new EGR valve perform geronimo? Im just curious. ive not heard of any problems with the turbo actuator on the 170 and to be fair its very quiet on egr issues with the Roc 170 in general. I only do short journeys and not had a problem with mine (touch wood) previous I owned an A3 2.0 tdi 140 PD with the infamous but equally awsome "BKD" engine which are well known for egr issues but again i never had an issue with that either.

Re: turbo fault(acctuator) and egr problem
i had a problem with the delivery of the egr,the company kept changing the the eta,so i told them to stuff it and got a refund.
i had a word with my mechanic,he said if i can live with the fault light it would be fine (he is audi/vw trained and well fluent in the issue).
i have toyed with the idea of a remap and having the egr light sorted,a remap is about £200,but i would like to get the remap and time on a rolling road, which comes in at about £380 plus vat.just watching the finances at moment so for now i am living with it.
