The countdown has begun..
to my Scirocco R exiting stage left.........
I've had five cracking years with the Scirocco, 2.5 yrs with the GT and the same with the R and i've not regretted it for a minute.
I've loved both cars and i will be sad to see the R go in around 7 weeks time or potentially sooner.
I was thinking of ordering another R but it seems VW have made my mind up for me and discontinued it so i'm moving brands.
The standard Roc is a great car and i would encourage anyone looking for a car to try it.
I think it offers quite a unique blend of talents that for me others have imitated but not quite matched.
The competition from Ford, Vauxhall, Volvo and Renault just don't cut it for me.
The Roc is still the champion all rounder, but then again i'm a tad biased.
The R has been an absolute cracker of a car to own, building on everthing the standard car does well.
Is still gets lots of admiring looks from passers by and fellow motorists and puts a smile on my face everytime i get chance to "open up the taps"
No doubt I'll keep an eye on the forum over the next weeks and months whilst i ween myself off the Roc.
I'll be posting details of my Roc in the "For Sale" section shortly to see if anyone is interested as i'd love it to go to a good home.
I've also enjoyed the forum over the last five years and some of the lovely mods that you've all done, long may it continue.
All the best, Jon

Re: The countdown has begun..
Sorry, this is long winded..........thought someone might be interested in reading. Feel free to doze off.
I've been in dialogue with my local dealers, a bunch of brokers and some people who've sourced cars for me in the past.
I've also trawled the nearly and used cars on the net, everything from Aston to Porsche.
It has not been easy finding something to follow the R.
Primarily i've been looking for something with an extra set of doors and performance / equipment to match the Roc.
Not that the Roc is impractical, it has managed everything i've thrown at with ease.
I also wanted to drop my monthly payments down and at a stretch find something better on fuel / less road tax.
The front runner was the new Gen S3 (Sportback) with an S Tronic Box and a few goodies. Seeing the photos online really got my attention.
It pretty much ticks all of the criteria above so i started the ball rolling with my local dealer and i was in there the day there demo arrived.
I have to say i was totally underwhelmed by the overall look of the car and didn't even get as far as a test drive in the end.
A lot of the early cars appear to have been shipped with the standard S-line wheels which didn't help and the Audi white was very flat.
Just to be sure i went along to see a Estoril Crystal Blue one in Stoke which was the colour i wanted, but again i wasn't convinced.
I'm sure the 3Dr would look better but as that's my main criteria i have to rule it out.
What did suprise me is that on the MQB platform the A3 doesn't come across as anymore accomodating than the Scirocco, in fact the boot appeared smaller but i'm sure the figures may say different. There was no real gain in rear passenger space for me over the Roc either, again i felt it was a little less accomodating. Would like to see what other have thought about the A3.
Don't get me wrong, it'll be an epic mile muncher in all conditions and super quick point to point but ultimately (for me) bland. I totally understand why people will buy them however.
Having seen an A3 Saloon S line in the flesh, i actually think the S3 Saloon will be the pick of the range but i can't bring myself to wait.
So the search began again when an offer came my way for a VW Touareg 3.0 TDI 245 R Line. The deal was incredible, a £45k car for £100+ a month less than the R so i just had to go drive one. I hunted around and found one but it was sold so i just went along to dip a toe in the water to see if it was even worth considering. In R Line spec it is actually a decent looking off roader and the standard spec is superb.
Nobody could find me one to test drive and i ended up driving a boggo Touareg for 30 mins with a babysitter from my local dealership watching my every move. I got a feel for the car but by this time i'd lost interest in the idea. The drive soon flagged up it was too much of a leap from the Roc into a 4x4 so that idea was killed off. Dissapointing performance from the dealer as well, no offer of an extended test drive which may have swung the balance back potentially the more time i spent with it.
So the search started again. My family are all big BMW people, my dad's had pretty much every model from the range over the years. My Brother, brother in law, uncle, Mum, sister and father in law all drive them so i've been the automotive black sheep for many years.
Looking round the BMW website lead me to the 3 Series configurator........... Final bit i promise.

Re: The countdown has begun..
Flicking through the various trim levels, powertrain and engine options i found myself drawn to a 330d M Sport Saloon.
Four doors, 0-60 in 5.6, qouted 50+ MPG vs 34 for the Roc, £105 tax, I needed to investigate further and soon booked a test drive.
From this point on what seemed to be a strong case became just became a no brainer.
The dealer gave me a 330d M Sport Saloon all to myself for the best part of a day.
Ok so it's no oil painting, but in the right colour combo and M Sport Plus trim it ain't bad for a saloon.
In every other area it blew me away. Performance wise this thing was rapid, the new ZF eight speed clicks through the gears as quick as the DSG but far smoother.
I have no doubt that in a straight line it would outdrag my R and the handling was very tight and controlled and the damping / nvh was superb.
The Nav system is very intuitive, the Harman Kardon sound sytem as expected given the price difference gives more punch than the Dynaudio in the VW.
All in i finished the test drive in disbelief at what a great all round package the car was, in the end the outcome was inevitable.
So after much huffing / puffing (mainly from the salesmen) i secured a circa £6000 discount and 3.9% APR which meant £150 a month less in payments than the Roc R and hopefully there are other savings to come in the long run with fuel and road tax.
I've gone for a 330D M Sport Auto Saloon, Black sapphire (shock) with Coral Red Leather (nice in the flesh, black made cabin too dark) with Proff Media, M Sport Plus package (Xenon / 19's / Brake Upgrade / Harman Kardon etc) and a couple of other bits.
I'm not looking forward to seeing the Roc R go at all, but i'm certain the arrival of the BM will soften the blow.
Thanks everyone for making this such a great forum, it has been great to talk with like minded owners over the years and of course learn all the important bits about the car the bloody dealers don't know.
I'll still keep an eye on the forum for Roc developments in the future and look forward to upcoming mods on some of the special cars featured on this site.
All the best, Jon

After a test drive I chose to stay with the Roc!

(that wasn't me LOL!) Is the M Sport anything to do with Malcolm Wilson's M-Sport rally company up the road from me?
