Headlight restoration tips?

Post by Data Ghost »

Hi All,

I have non xenon headlights in my Scirocco which on close inspection have a few stone marks and scratches on the lenses.

I know you can get headlight restoration kits however I feel this is a little extreme on such a new car. Has anyone got any tips on products I can use to tidy them up a bit?

If I wanted to, could the lenses be replaced or would I need to replace the whole headlight module?

Cheers :)

Need to replace the whole headlight module as lenses are glued. The lens plastic seems a bit soft. There is a thread on here somewhere about repair but it is extreme as you note so would leave until they get bad.

These kits are pretty good but you must bare in mind that while sanding back the plastic surface to remove the defects you are also removing the UV protection on the headlight.

After you are happy with the correction work it is important to apply a sealant which will once again protect the headlights from UV or they will end up going yellow and you'll have to do it over again.

I'm not aware of what the industry standard UV protection product(s) are, but a good sealant such as GTechniq C4 or Opti-Lens should do the job, though it will probably need topping up with further coat(s) every 12-18 months.

If you are in Cornwall, there is a bodyshop just outside St Austell which apparently does the respray on the lenses.
