Viewing a Scirocco Tomorrow, Any Advise?

Post by Andy Rocc »

Going to view this tomorrow http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... gcode=visc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Now i know sod all about VWs so any help will be welcomed! I want the GT spec but i don`t want the 2.0 TSi. At the moment i don`t do mega miles and i`m a bit worried about the DPF issues. My current car is a Volvo C30 D2 and so far with the milage i do i have no DPF issues. I travel to work the long way which is 12 miles of motorway and roughly 2/3 miles of standard roads, coming home its a mix of motorway/A roads over approx 10 miles. As from the link its coming from a VW dealer and is still under MF warrany but is there anything i should be looking for? also would members on here think the price is fair?

Cheers for any input guys

:welcome:
First off, Parkers guide says they are asking too much (others may suggest Glass's guide for when dealing with dealers but I personally just refer against Parkers & they aren't that far apart) [£15340],
Don't get caught up in all the wording on the ad as everything they have listed there is standard for that model straight out of the factory I can't see a single option listed on the front page so think about if there are any options you would specifically want (ie cruise control: dealers won't retrofit to that age of car you would need to source an independent like hazy days or similar) (I am intrigued by the apparent centre rear seat belt mentioned in the overview though seeing as its a 2+2 format car lol)
digging further in they say it has phone prep although also with a big disclaimer that is current car spec not what they are selling , have a look to see if it has the box under the passenger seat but note: the rsap bluetooth was superseded by proper bluetooth in week 45 of that year so this car may have missed out on that depending on its build date if it was fitted (if its got the box, see if you can get the dealer to try connecting an iphone/htc to it to confirm its not rsap)

the main thing is check round that its not scratched/scraped/dinted, no funny noises when running, I can't think of anything in particular you should be looking for

good luck

My dad's CC has the same engine with the DPF. He's retired so the only driving he does really is to the shop for his morning paper, which is about a mile away. No issues with the DPF (touch wood) but I have noticed that sometimes after a short journey and with the ignition off, the active regeneration will continue for a while (sounds like the fans running). I believe this to be normal/expected behaviour given the short jurneys. He does try and take it for a blast on the motorway every now and then, but I don't think your driving situation will cause you any issues with the DPF.

I know when they first came out they had lots of issues with DPF's - hopefully most have now been ironed out.

It is the fans running that you hear and it's not just because of the short journeys. As I understand it the car periodically regenerates the DPF and if you happen to switch off the engine mid regeneration the fans run on for 5 mins to assist in dissipating the heat.

My car spends it's life on the motorway and I get it happening every now and again.

As said above pay litle attention to the ad wording. VW are terrible at this and their descriptions cannot be relied upon without seeing the car. When I got mine last year I found about a third of the cars advertised as DSG were actually manual once you opened the pictures up and had a close look!

Looks like it has the new steering wheel so the Bluetooth should be the newer version?

This is true and its not just VW. It seems some dealers don't have a clue even about their own cars

that steering wheel style came in at the model change in May 2009, its not linked to changes in bluetooth at all

I was going to get the 170bhp diesel too but driving the petrol changed my mind. It's quite a lot cheaper to buy and I can get 400+ miles out of a tankful of fuel (best is 452 so far). Unless you do more than 20,000 miles per year over several years you won't recoup the extra cost of the car and fuel. I'd get the 2.0 TSI then no DPF worries

I agree with RocMan, I don't see the point in a diesel unless you do the mileage.
To fill a 2.0TSI, in the region of £75, if completely empty, 55L tank

Tony is right. Try working the sums out over several years - I do around 15,000 miles per year and after three years I still wouldn't have made my money back with the diesel. I guess you just have to try both and see what you prefer. The petrol makes a great noise though :)

Hmmmm, £75 over 400 mile = 0.1875 pence per mile. Might start looking at the 2.0TSi GT  I was looking at the 1.4TSi engined versions however the 122 HP would be a bit slow, the 160 HP would be great if it didn`t have its engine problems.

I had a 1.4TSI (160) before the 2L TSI, the 2L TSI is a completely different beast, the 1.4L was good but the 2L is .......................... :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

FYI, my 2.0Tsi after 16,037 miles has cost me exactly 20.64 pence per mile. This is with hardly any motorway mileage, just a couple of long journeys a year. It's mostly mixed rural/urban stuff with a bit of dual carriageway. Average fill-up £59.94 mostly filled when dropping below 1/4 tank.
