GT upgrade to an R?

Post by ST270 »

Hi all,

Firstly I know some folks on here will be biased but objectively speaking I am due a car change and I am wondering about upgrading my GT tsi to an R. I have had the GT for 3 years and would keep the R for another 3. My concerns are that it won't be that much different to the GT (i stand to be corrected!) and will it be a bit dated come time to move it on. The other variants of the Roc are very popular these days but I do like the way the car handles all that is thrown at it and still enthuses me when driving it. For the record my car is bluefinned DSG so no slouch. Any opinions?

I'd take the R.... But then I would say that.

Will it e that much faster than a chipped GT, probably not, well not until also chipped.

The suspension as I recall is a notch firmer than the other ROCs so R's comfort is GTs Normal.

Apart from the styling differences I don't think there's too much in it.

Don't forget the R uses a different engine to the GT which will have ups and downs.

I've recently done a similar upgrade to an R, but from a bluefin'd Audi A3 2.0Tfsi which will be almost identical in terms or performance to your tsi. And trust me, the step up is significant.
The extra oomph from the larger turbo on the R is very obvious.
Your tsi will probably feel more lively under 2k rpm due to the smaller turbo, but after that the R is in a different league. And with a remap... forget about it!!

I went from a manual revo remap gt tsi to an dsg R and it is worth the change.

I think the R is a much better car all round. It handles a lot better and I love the dsg.

I upgraded from a GT to the R as soon as the R became available. There is no comparison! The R is a totally different drive and ride. Its very special!

Had a 2.0 TSI (stage1 apr) for nearly 3 years and then changed to an R. From the first moment I drove the car it felt different, you would not regret it at all, I plan on doing the same as you and keeping this one roughly 3 years (already had it a year) but with the way things are going at the moment it may well be longer, I love it, go for an R.

Oooh, I'm just going through this very debate with myself. The heart says "yes" but the head says "don't be stupid, you don't need it". "Need" v. "Want". It's always a bummer that one :(

You need an R. Does this help?
Try saving a nice PC wallpaper to get used to the idea. Now look at all those lurvely R's...

(oh be sure to get 19" alloys as the Comfort setting on DCC handles everything)

Had a GTI Ed30 before the R it really does handle differently, it's not so much the power but the overall standard setup is just so much better balanced. You know you really want too the dealers will still be open if you hurry..

Same for me, nearly 3 years in a DSG GT followed by 2 years in my R. Both great cars but I have absolutely no regrets about making the move. Still puts a huge smile on my face. Yes the dash is all a bit too familiar now but the little R touches and minor MY upgrades will still be noticeable. Maybe go for the colour MFD / DIS If ordering from new. My problem is what to have after an R.....that's my current headache. Good luck.
08/11 - 12/13 2.0 TSI R DSG, Black / Black Vienna
01/09 - 08/11 2.0 TSI GT DSG, Black / Truffle Vienna

Black is the new Black....

I think it's time to go for a test drive IF I can finds a dealer near me with an R DSG available to drive but something tells me that none of the 4 in striking distance will have one to play with. Time to get on the phone!

This is exactly what I did, it totally made my mind up on what to do, the one I drove was out of my price range so couldn't purchase it, I asked the dealer to source me one and they were true to their word and tracked down a part ex coming into a BMW dealership :-D
