Soundaktor!!!!!

Post by Darren.Collett »

For those of you that haven't heard about this, it's a device fitted to the 2.0 tdi 170 & 2.0 tsi to make the engine note sound more throaty under acceleration.

It is an electrical unit.

I disconnected it on my tdi yesterday and have to say the cabin is much quieter under acceleration. Highly recommended. Don't get me wrong, I love a throaty engine note but only when it's genuine and not created by some piece of electrical junk.

I still find it hard to believe VW would actually fit this to a vehicle!!!!!!!

Each to their own. I would rather make mechanical changes to induce those kinds of sounds. :shake:

Even though this has been covered (as said), I didnt know it was fitted to the 2.0tsi! I always thought it didn't have it and my exhaust was making weird noises. Now I know!

Have you got instructions somewhere on how to disconnect? Is it complicated?

I don't mind it, but sometimes it drowns out my music. I do like the sound though, along with the turbo making all sorts of noises, gives me a proper buzz! But I prefer my music :)

Edit: Looking back at the original post, I have spotted where RW1 (RIP to the Legend) has stated that it's installed in the 210ps, must have missed it. All makes sense now. This forum is a wealth of knowledge, I might not even need garages anymore :p

Everything as above except I didnt remove my wipers!

Make sure you cable tie a bag or something over the connector to stop it letting water in and rattling about afterwards

Good point, thanks, will keep that in mind too. Definitely wouldn't want a rattle in place of the "roaring" noise the speaker produces

I seem to remember reading somewhere that access to this thing on later cars is a lot more difficult and does involve removal of wipers - that has sometimes proven to be very difficult without the aid of a wiper removal tool and even then often resulted in broken trip... it was also discussed whether it was possible to switch it off with VCDS - the answer (from the late, great RW1) was no!

It's SO much easier when you remove the wipers (it takes 5 minutes)

Also, I did not disconnect the big plug from the control box, I disconnected the small plug from the actual speaker and removed the speaker. Then cable tied the wire to the hole where the nut attached the speaker.

No rattles and a quiet cabin :)

Does Wiper removal that's being talked about involve removing the whole mechanism? Or just the blades? (Silly question, I know :/)

This was taken from the thread I put a link to.
A post from the late rw1
RW1 wrote:Its in under the plastic covers at the bottom of the windscreen where the wiper motor and mechanism is. Not on the 160PS. As I wrote above only the 170PS diesel, TSi 210PS Wk45/09 onwards and the R models have it.

I just pulled back the rubber seal running along the bottom of the rain cover - separated the two halves of the rain cover it in the middle and lifted it up - came off easily - then you access to the soundaktor. Unbolt, unplug and then cover and secure the plug and reverse to fit. 10 mins max
